Meanwhile, a project being led by the British Foreign Policy Group and the Centre for Social and Political Risk has measured attitudes towards accepting more non-EU immigrants as part of post-Brexit trade deals.

The good news is that the citizens of Global Britain are willing to accept higher levels of non-EU migrants in these circumstances. The bad news is that for this to be true the migrants really really need to be white. A majority are happy to see more migrants from Canada, Australia and the US. Only 35 per cent said the same for Korea. Significantly higher numbers - presumably to offset the loss of workers from the EU - were acceptable to less than one in ten if the migrants in question were from India or China.

The EU have been consistent on the backstop so I can only presume May’s visit is a desperate trip on her own volition and they have sent Junker to merely smile at her. The EU can’t change the backstop so there’s no point to her visit.

That sounds very plausible. If the EU are going to send anyone to deadpan May then Junker is the perfect candidate.

I am an EU citizen. That is being stripped away from me by Brexit. Think about it. Freedom of Movement to live and work in 27 other countries.

I wasn't an EU citizen.
I resented being British.
I even struggled with being English. (What with Horsham being a grey desolate northern outpost).

But by jimminy I'm European now.

This shitshow has done wonders for making me detest our political leaders and have me pinning for what they have across the channel.

Won't it be nice when we are back in the multi-racial World, instead of the corporate white club that is the EU.

Would a remainer like to post a picture of the EU heads of state,so we can play spot the difference?

Its a nice club and we have England v Australia in the games every 4 years, but in the past couple of decades has it achieved anything at all?

Ah yes, the Commonwealth, most of whom have a trade deal with the EU, and whose members we are deporting for spurious reasons.

A ringing endorsement of Brexit, the standing of the country and Mrs May by The Sun's former political editor Trevor Kavanagh in today's edition - https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/86069...-leadership-has-uk-grovelling-abyss/#comments

Well worth reading.

It seems to maintain the idea that there was a way to do this that would be great though. I agree it could have been handled better, but all the things that led to this point, the red lines, the no deal is better than a bad deal talk, the submission of A50 before having a consensus on direction, even within her own party, let alone Parliament, were all heralded as the way to go by the SUN and other pro Brexit papers.

I agree. I just heard his piece mentioned in the paper reviews this morning as being worth reading though due to how damning it was. As you say, somewhat hypocritical of him though, because two and half years ago he was saying this:

It is not impossible the entire EU structure will have collapsed in the two years before Brexit.

The debate over tariffs and trade could be eclipsed by a real-time revolution which brings the creaking “Grand Projet” to its knees.

The apparent weakness of the UK between the devil and the deep blue sea is, in fact, our greatest strength.

The stricken EU needs us far more than we need it.

It needs our trade. It needs our soft power and our military power, our security skills and our respected place at the world’s top table.

It needs a deal.

Ill-judged threats of reprisal and retaliation from the likes of “Drunken” Juncker are pure bluff. The resolute Theresa May needs to be ready to call that bluff.

Ready for last minute distribution of papers around the commons tomorrow with the Attorney General's legal interpretation of the backstop, when she fails to get a deal tonight.

Just a guess

“Who does Theresa May represent these days? ”

That’s a pretty damning comment from the EU.
