If grilled until the cheese is almost melting off the toast then it makes no difference whether it's sliced or grated. Therefore sliced is the preferred method as it's quicker.

Love a bit of Worcestershire Sauce on top too.

Sliced for adults, grated for the children. Don't forget the Worcester sauce and a little ground black pepper. On rye or sourdough not cheap white sliced that's so gross. No pun intended.

Grated, obviously.

If you are getting gaps then you're not putting enough cheese on. If grating cheese is too much faff then you don't deserve cheese on toast.

Douse VERY liberally with Worcester and Tobasco before grilling.
