I was under the impression that Amex originally were going to refurb it but found the place was full of asbestos and found it easier and cheaper to build the new one and knock the old one down.

Used to work in their bar back in the eighties.

we would have definitely met then![]()
There were three of us "guys" Paul (looked like Sylvester Stallone) a blond Dutch guy who was tall (can't remember his name). I was the third one 6'2" wearing glasses. Used to work mostly at weekends only p/t to get away from my missus. Worked with Tom - really enjoyed my nights there and on occasions used to go for afters with various people socialising - a party or Sgt Yorks etc.
Most of my time at the Amex S&S was somewhat 'depraved' .... I was up on the 4th floor in those days and it is best forgotten![]()

Iconic building, should not have been demolished.
Iconic?
This. Beautiful, elegant wedding cake of a building. But then B&H rarely cherish what they've got til it's gone. Same as it ever was.
My exact thoughts. It wasn't the worst building around by a long way but iconic? Balls. Iconic means it would be recognisable like the pier or pavillion. I guarantee hardly anyone outside of Brighton has ever seen or heard of it to remember it. A poster on here even said "where is that"?
Plus as someone said, riddled with asbestos. It's no Hove Town Hall but it was pretty grim.
I've had more iconic shits.
think it's been empty over a year at least

Yeah, my step-father worked on the construction, and died of mesothelioma a few years ago.
When did it start being demolished as I was at Sussex County recently and it looked to be still being used. They are always saying they need student accommodation could it not have been converted from offices to bedrooms in a hostel for student?
