The idea of a Royal Family is so totally outdated. This is 2016.

As individuals I find them all totally bland and of no interest.

the problem as i see it with republicanism is that it does solve much. yes, you voted in the head of state instead of appointment by birth, but beyond that principle what does it actually change in terms of governance? there are so many different forms of republic its hard to see, and they seem to bring problems. theres still the entourage, the hangers on, the state banquets and palaces to staff and run, the security, the general accusation of wasting public money. if you were starting from scratch you wouldnt chose a monarchy, but then you'd probably look hard at the nature of democracy as we implement it too. it got its benefits, the inate sense of duty and long term view is something we are missing in our party politics. its worked for us well for over 300 years, so until theres a genuinly better alternative on offer, best to stick with it.

The whole concept of a royal family is an outdated anachronism. They certainly shouldn't receive any public funding.

It ain't broke so don't fix it. Chazzer my be a bit of a challenge, but I have every faith in the young emoter next in line. Plus the Yanks would spunk a mass of dosh to have our history. God bless the Queen (irrespective of my view that there is no god) if you'll accept a very nuanced statement of opinion. There is probably more content in this reply than there is words. Apols again :cheers:

doesn’t do any harm to anyone, doesn’t distract democratically, doesn’t cost anything to moan about individually, a lady that always has the best interests of its citizens as her core goal, a great ambassador to our friends all over the commonwealth.

whats not to like.

Lets hope William and Catherine continue the good work(hoping Charles is locked up to talk with vegetables),things look even better with the more astute younger generation and their responsibilities. The future is very bright for the British Monarchy.

No chance of it being abolished for in my lifetime nor even the next generation
as Corbyn said its not a battle he wants……why would he?

...unlike our political friends, who, of course, are oozing personality and charisma. Are honest and have our best interest at heart.

The nearly 90 year old Queen has been on the throne for 64 years. What is your view on the UK's hereditary unelected Head of State?
As she has no real say over our political systems, save for some ceremonial responsibilities, and the financial outlay by the treasury is small compared to the income derived from the tourism they obviously encourage..... I say she has done a decent job overall.

The idea of a hereditary head of state is old fashioned but in reality she is merely a figurehead and does a very good job at it. The government run the country pretty much unhindered.

The alternative is probably a president and then you have to ask who are you likely to get then!!!! If it were like America, then the head of state would be a position bought by the highest bidder. That would leave a nasty taste in the mouth.

Yes, the American system is both ridiculously convoluted and corrupt, partly due to their refusal to allow caps on electioneering spend but that doesn't invalidate the concept of an elected president chosen on merit.

I have a lot of time for QE2 who does a magnificent job but the position is an anachronism and helps perpetuate a system that still, to some degree, favours who you know rather than what you know.

Time to move on.....!?

The whole concept of a royal family is an outdated anachronism. They certainly shouldn't receive any public funding.

....unlike the Civil Service who continue to bleed us dry and bog the whole country down with levels of bureaucracy that hinder business development at every turn. An organisation that is also hereditary, ensuring a steady line of public school attendees fill all manner of hugely paid and obscure posts, eventually leading to knighthoods and awards and pensions that you and I can only dream about. The Royal Family generates wealth for this country. The Civil Service costs us billions in pen-pushers and meetings, This is where there has to be a cull. Not in schools, hospitals or vital services but in thousands of individuals doing routine and meaningless jobs, just to prop up the political elite in this country and ensure their self-interests are maintained. They don't represent us. They pretend they do. They were all exposed with snouts in the trough but we have all turned a blind eye to it and just let the nonsense continue.
Monarchy works and pays for itself.
