The Socialist, under pressure over contested labour reforms and growing street protest movements, reopened the divisive question of whether students could be banned from wearing headscarves at French universities.

In a long interview with the daily Libération, he was asked whether headscarves should be banned by law from universities and replied: “It should be done,” conceding that the constitution made it difficult."

i thought the universities themselves had already imposed related rules, so this is a for the gallery? in any case, anyone who thinks banning a headscarf is necessary or will help is a fool, and opens up all sorts of issues - so much for liberty, no head wear for you. there's obvious limits with the burka and such the otherside of the line.

Very very worrying. It is as I thought. Far more than a small minority. Whilst it does not of course follow that traditional muslim views necessarily lead to suicide bombings, refusal to properly integrate certainly contributes to a situation of us and them, whereby extremism flourishes rather more easily.

Indeed, yet some will still not see the real and present danger. Very hard for the Guardian luvvies to portray Trevor Phillips and Channel 4 as rabid islamophobes.

Allowing continued indoctrination of generations of young people with medieval beliefs will only end in more bloodshed and division.

Hear we go again. Is the Muslim culture compatible or able to integrate into western society? Are they capable in the long term to accept Sharia would be against OUR culture. Head coverings are fashion in western society (excepting nuns) but, certain head coverings are entirely viewed (by the wearers) as religious symbols in the Muslim world (maybe others). For me then they can wear what they like but, if I can't see your face, for me, you are a nobody to ignore! Just what the Muslim men want I guess.
