Just been to the Roebuck Inn at Laughton. Owned by the same people that run the Snowdrop at Lewes. The inside feels like they have't finished the refurbishment. The food was very good though, I had a trio of lamb which was both delicious and came in an enormous portion. My father had a confit ducks leg which he really enjoyed. Add to that the excellent beer and cider and it's well worth the trip.

Looking at that I'm rather sad they don't deliver to my place.

I believe you don't have to have it delivered. I messaged them once on facebook and they said you can drive to the kitchen where they cook it and pick it up. So it will be hot . I really liked it.
when I had it delivered it was HOT.

Had a meal out with Mrs V's family last week at Plateau by the town hall. Very disappointing I'm afraid. Went for the fish platter for two at £32 and found it pretty poor, it consisted of 3 small Mackerel Fillets with a Tandoori sauce, a portion of Hake a portion of Sea Trout and 2 Langoustine type Prawn thingys. This was served on a dirty old board with a selection of cold pickles, most indeterminate but, we did get a spoonful of Kimchi in the mix.
So the Hake and Sea Trout portions were about 3" X 2" each so we ordered some Truffle Frites and some seasonal vegetables to help us fill out. Unfortunately we got an Aluminium 1/3rd of a pint beaker loaded with about 18 chips for the two of us, some of which were filched by other members of our group. We then finished off with the Plateau Gourmand desert board at £19 consisting of six small portions of various deserts. These were pretty tasty but did not go far when shared between 5.

My conclusion, this is what we get thanks to Masterchef. We get small portions of sometimes odd combinations of food presented in a style that ranges from artistic to ludicrous in/on/over impractical plates/slates/boards. I think that Plateau is very much the Emperors New Clothes.... we got suckered in to paying a fortune for very little average food dressed up as a gourmand experience. In Brighton they will do well as there are enough people who earn too much money to fill their tables. Even the wine and the " Craft"/Belgian beers were somewhat over hyped too although they have missed a trick by puffing Westmalle Dubel as a classic Belgian beer ( Its a very average chuggable Belgian ) and only charging £5 for a bottle the Belgians can buy for 80p in Delhaize.

My advice, eat before you go as you will be hungry when you leave... unless you order a double lot of Truffle Frites at £4.50 a pop or about 20p per chip. In fact we spent £174.00 between the five of us when I could have had a filling well cooked fish dinner at my local chippy for £5.00.

Went to Oki-Nami for lunch today. Never been, not sure why.

Pretty quiet, but had a sushi set and a tempura bento box to share. Waitress asked if we were sharing, and recommended splitting them as courses which was a good idea.

Sushi was very good, good value too I thought, about £16 for 12 bits and 4 Nigiri I think.

Bento box consisted of a nice bit of rice, little salad and few bits of sushi again, and tempura was squid, soft shell crab and prawns.

Service was friendly, food was tasty and filling.

Would probably go for more often. Bill about £35 inc a couple of soft drinks

Went to the set last nite. Wow. Amazing how simple ingredients and no more than 4/5 can make wonderful dishes. Not too pricey either.

Tried out Fatto a Mano in London Road today. It didn't disappoint. Great Pizzas and fantastic value (kids eat free). Only slight downside is you cannot book tables for less than 6 people.

Can imagine it will be rammed with walk ups at the weekends. 9/10.

Ah so you made the mistake of going too ? I won't make the mistake of going twice though. I noticed the accents were a tad variable in there to say the least. Also, when Mrs V booked the table they asked for a £30 deposit which she had to pay by card over the phone. I may not eat out that often but this was a first for me, it's not like it was going to be rammed at 7 on a Tuesday in September, looks like another scurrilous attempt to make money ?

A disappointing addendum to my review of The Set. Went back as a 4 last night with old friends and it was as poor as the first one had been good. Table not ready when we arrived and plates not warmed nor wine poured before the dishes arrived. This meant that by the time they'd poured wine and described everything in minute detail the food was stone cold. Some of the new dishes are far too rich and they can't cook squid. Gutted.

Meant to add to this last week but I finally got to Silo last weekend for the tasting menu and it was utterly magnificent. £30 plus another score for wine pairings. I was going to try Set next but I've decided to revisit here instead.

Forget all the zero waste stuff; it's just excellent food on its own right.

Planet India is still the best curry house in Brighton, just so you know. Can't be beat in terms of taste and consistency.

Have the dhai bhel puri, samosas, black chickpeas, peas and paneer, tarka dall and the sweetcorn and patra and some chappattis (that's between 4).

Also pleased to report that I enjoyed Fatto A Mano on London Road, decent sized pizzas made with proper tomato sauce. You could get away with sharing a pizza and a side I reckon making it a very good place for a cheap dinner before the cinema. Gets busy though.

The Set Of Scales is the communal table, no reservation cafe at the front of The Artist's Residence. It just does "dirty" seafood, fish finger burgers, Kentucky Fried Cod Cheek, that sort of thing. I didn't see any evidence of them wanting to move the back (which is The Set) over to that way of doing things. I did see plenty of evidence of cold meat and overcooked squid though :(

I think you should be ok in December HT. They have basically said they will be a Christmas Party Free Zone and they're taking the bookings. The bigger debate is iff you will get magnificent, ordinary or somewhere in between.

TBF the first time we went there were at least three chefs in the open kitchen, we had an early table and it was just me and the Mrs. Last night we had a turned table of 4, there seemed to only be 2 chefs on, and, of my friends, one is vegetarian and the other has a nut allergy (whereas me and Mrs GB eat pretty much anything and everything). I think we probably made life easier for them the first time. Not much of an excuse but if you are going as a two and are able to eat more or less what they throw at you I think they'll cope.

Still, concerning. They've only got about 10 dishes to cook. I like sparse menus, but it enhances my expectations, so delivery is all the more important. We're going with another couple and wanted to go at a weekend. We had to book about eight weeks in advance.
