Of course other clubs will come sniffing, he's a good player. We simply say no. Our team is not very good, why would we want to sell one of our few good players?

It's not about wanting to sell a player.

We've made it clear before, and Paul Barber reiterated it on The Albion Roar last week, that if a player wants to leave - as is generally the case when there is a Premier League suitor - the club will not stand in their way and the objective becomes on of securing the best possible financial return for the club.

Agreed.

There is no hope at all if we keep selling the decent players.

If that is the strategy, then we need to sign 18 excellent players at once, and hope we go up that season, because if not they will all be off.

It makes a mockery of this mad idea about building a team, and only going up 'when we are ready'.

Should already be given an extended contract. Makes financial sense as he could go for a lot of money

A very noticeable thing today was Kayal's absolute frustration at the amount of times some other players were not on his wavelength.
Let's hope he gets some assurances that players of his ilk will be coming in...

Then we had better get used to Championship football as we will never go higher all the time we have no backbone and keep selling our best players.

Mind you we have sold the family silver now and are left with worthless junk.

Leicester offered £9m for Troy Deeney last summer and Watford said no....
That was after we said yes to £8m for Ulloa.
That's why Watford are in the Premier League and we nearly made League 1.

So it's not if a player wants to leave it's whether the club wants the player to leave (length of contract left does play a part}....

Where in that tale did you say Troy Deeney wanted to leave?

How do you know Ulloa did, and Deeney didn't. Sorry, I'm not really seeing your point here. Players always want to leave when someone higher offers a contract - if they don't go they generally carry on. Calderon is a good example.

Must be something in Kayal's character/personal life that has stopped a top division team buying him.

On the pitch he's definitely Premier League class.

That's not specifically true. If it were, then it would mean we would sell for the best price, even if that price was just £1m. That's not what we'll do, we'll only sell when the figure becomes too high to turn down, as it was with Ulloa.

No one (virtually) thought we should be holding on to Ulloa for the amount we were offered. Buckley is an excellent player but was injury prone, and I think the price for Bridcutt was good enough. Of course we'll sell if the price is good enough and the same is true of Kayal, but he's our best player and that price would have to be very high.

But we have a habit of not saying "No" don't we?

If the bid is over a couple of million I reckon we'd encourage the player out of the door, not quite the same as not standing in the way. Probably the only way to stay within FFP with our small crowds and insignificant commercial income. It's tough being one of the tiny clubs in this league.

We should be looking at building a midfield of something like

Lansbury
Stephens
Kayal
Ince
Bennett

not going backwards by selling the best of our players yet again.

We are not so good at saying no to other teams. Take a look at Watford today. Whilst we were offloading Ulloa last summer, they refused all offers for Troy Deeney. You will never get anywhere if you keep selling the family silver and replacing it with crap or nothing at all.

Amazing. Club signs excellent player. Thread turns into club-bashing based on hypothetical sale of said player. Can't win, can they?
