I go to Blackpool about 5 times a year on business, and HATE the place. Every pub has the obligatory dozen smokers blocking the entrance, half out of their mind and the other half beating up their missus. I have to visit the South Shore area and in its favor I will say it is trying to move upmarket. Hotels are going boutique style and pubs are changing their image, but it is, was and always will be Blackpool.
But can I recommend an Indian Restaurant that is very good. South Shore and one road back is Lytham Road (close to football ground). The Taj Mahal is next door to Wetherspoons and if you can get through the smoke screen, Ma Kellys is two doors down. The Indian is unlicensed so grab a bottle from Tesco three doors down or they will get a bottle for you if you want.

When I asked the missus if she wanted to come with me to Blackpool for the day again when we played there this year - she just looked at me as if to say 'are you mad?'.
My abiding memory of my visits is of the smell of chips and donkey debris. But - the beer is cheap, and there are plenty of places to buy it. Quite a few of the pubs are also proper old fashioned drinking holes with pool and darts - something which seems to be dying out over time with this trend for making pubs 'nicer'.- or the
Eating is mainly limited to the chippy - or the above recommendation for an indian. The chip shops all have boards saying 'Today's Special', which always ends up being fish and chips... The streets are littered with chip wrappers, and as it's always windy, they blow around a lot.
If you're going on the trams, make sure you wait for one of the old ones ('heritage trams') as most of the services are now just new shiny ones, which aren't so much fun.
So, if you're going for a cheap and boozy weekend, you'll enjoy it. And - they do have the 'original (or one of them anyway), as seen on channel 4' Gypsy Petulengro, so you can always while away an hour in the queue to find out our fortunes for next year... The Winter Gardens is also worth popping in to - just to have a look around, and if you can get into the halls and showrooms between events - do so.
And let us know what your visit was like!

You say that Blackpool is the most depressing place you've been to. I think you'd better name the 49 countries. They might all be posh holiday destinations.

You can always make the most of anywhere with the right attitude. I went there with a girlfriend from Bolton a few years ago for a day. Just got involved, went up the tower, tram, ice cream and chippy, few pints in cheesy bars. I wouldn't go again but it was a bit of a laugh.
