I imagine it's circling low to burn fuel off more quickly so it's light enough to land. If the wheel is stuck they should be able to use the backup system which effectively uses gravity (or in some cases a controlled explosion) to force it into position rather than motors.

Im guessing if it cant manually drop and lock the gear it might divert to an airport which is not so busy ( but of course would need full emergeny cover)

SHould drop and lock manually very rarely is it a total failure... ( Aicraft Engineer 30 years) he was out bound to vegas so would still have plenty of fuel even after dumping ..

Landing gear stuck out is a million times better than landing gear stuck in.

No its not.....gear can be gravity lowered ie using its own weight and gravity to free fall it, If a mechanical breakage has caused a jam the only way to free it would be high G turns or last resort a heavy landing...very very risky.

Looks like it just doing a bigger loop to me, maybe getting runway ready and emergency vehicles etc in position....

Hope goes ok, can't imagine being on the plane be it crew or passenger

Is this App aimed specifically at morbid people waiting to see a plane go missing?

Also use it to track flights in , example when collecting friends/family from airport you can see delays / track the flight
