It started raining the closer we got to Goodwood.
Threw it down all round there, and stayed raining all the way home.

As I walked in through the front door, it had stopped raining by the time I'd reached the back door, and Stat Towers ain't that big.

As per Saturday's route this sort of thing never works well by committee so knock yourself out Hamilton.
It's the company not the route, that's important.
But with that said my ride on 24.08 might be worth you casting an eye over.

Hamilton What with being 50 miles away and being AWOL last weekend, I've got no chance joining the cool ride.

Motogp was ace by the way. Even though my head is bright red still.

I just watched the Vuelta highlights on Eurosport and was amazed at how similar the weather was to yesterday. And then Anacona attacked again!

It took a while before I realised that it was a repeat from yesterday, and that today was a rest day. I didn't tell anyone - my son was already annoyed with me as he wanted to watch Transfer Deadline Day.

Oh well.

Great ride RandyWanger. I envy you.

I'm going to disagree with Stat slightly and say that I can't see any reason you should go for a hybrid over a road bike with the usage you've described (commuting on the road). If you were to go for one, make sure it's at the road bike end of the spectrum rather than mountain bike: no suspension, thin wheels/tyres (maybe around 28mm?), thinner/lighter frame.

Disc brakes would be good, they are more commonly found on mountain bikes and hybrids, but are starting to become more popular one road bikes. My next purchase will possibly be a cyclocross bike with disc brakes for winter use.

You'd probably want to make sure it had eyelets for attaching mudguards plus that there is clearance between the frame/fork/brakes to fit them, this is one thing that is rarer on road bikes.

The frame size required will depend more on your inside leg, torso and arm reach measurements plus also the position you like (aggressive and low or more comfortable and upright), your height can only give a vague estimate as to what these might be. You're probably going to fall in the medium to large frame sizes, say somewhere around 54-57cm. Though because of the varying frame geometries one manufacturers 54cm could be the same fit as anothers 57cm. Hybrids and mountain bikes seem to use inches for their frame measurements, so I think 16-18", would be about the equivalent. I have 57cm road bike and 18" mountain bike, I'm 5'11" with 33" inside leg.

Many thanks - that's really helpful.

OK Geeks.

So, we have no game next Saturday, so that feels like the perfect time for a Geeks ride.

I'm proposing a circular route taking in West Sussex that will enable people to join at different points.

Starting at Brighton Pier at 8.30 we'll head out west to Worthing Pier and then Littlehampton to pick up new riders. We'll then head up to Arundel for a bit of a climb before descending into Amberley and then onto Storrington. After that we'll take in some lovely country lanes via Ashurst and through to Steyning.

From there we'll have two choices: the Brighton crew can head further east via Fulking and Poynings before heading over the Dyke and home, whilst the Worthing crew can head down the Coombes road to Shoreham airport and then back along the coast to the pier.

This is not a time for putting down the hammer so we'll be setting a steady pace and not a mad one.

So, geeks, who's up for it?

Ah nightmare, would have been well up for this but I'm going to watch the Brighton Speed Trials :(

Sounds like it's Hamilton, Stat Brother and me so far. Nobody else interested? Bold Seagull - could have sworn you were interested.

Come on you lot, I want to sit in the middle of a large peleton and freewheel.

Bold's on holiday till tomorrow.

Having just looked at Jnr's sportive photos, riding behind me will be like sitting behind a sight screen, but with less of a view.

A fella I met and rode with for the first, and only time, a couple of weeks ago, is currently on Day 1 of Raid Dolomites.

Distance 149.0 miles - Moving Time 7:51:16 - Elevation 8,957ft.

Today finished with an ascent of the Simplonstrasse climb, 13 miles long, 4,000 ft of climbing.

Poor Nairo :( So what do we think? Lost this Vuelta today or strong enough to claw back the lost time?

If Bert keeps up this form I think Movistar have got their work cut out and is going to be very hard to beat now.

I know Froome's a fighter more than a quitter, but I've a funny feeling he won't see this Vuelta through to the end.

Very long tipping heads up. If young Bob Jungels is still there come the last day then get on him for an e/w for the stage. He'll still be decent odds and very well worth a punt regardless of who's still left in.

I like that

Did you see the gear Bert was pushing today? Phil (not the most reliable I know) reckons it was a 62. It certainly looked huge and he was pushing it with no doubt an 11 on the back. Obviously there was a fair bit of descending and flat to get it going on.

Any idea what Bert Grabsch used to push? He was one for the knee busters wasn't he.

Maybe has lost it. Valverde will be throwing his toys again and demanding he is top dog!

Amazes me that the graphic reckons his average hr is 147. That seems very low, that's my 'ride for 4 hours' hr.

Anyone watching the Vuelta today? Should be another good one. Hope someone puts some time in to Contador, that way we should be set for a classic battle for the next ten days. If not it could get a bit boring.

Are any of you cycling bods interested in the various parts of a old Butchers Bike (you know the type - small front wheel, big basket - except it does not have the basket). It is in bits, and would be a project to get it running again - but if you are interested pm me.

That was fantastic, Froome is really off of form but what an effort he just put in. Catch the highlights everybody, it is worth it.
