where waitrose is now. Given the new waitrose in hove. It'd be perfect.

The Waitrose is a) too small to get a full line department store in that space b) has very inadequate parking c) Waitrose have just spent a lot of money on renovating the Brighton store.

You could get four storeys there with one underground. There's plenty of parking in the vicinity.

Next time I'm in town I'll take a look in these two shops. Thanks.

Profile (heard of them!?) has around 3 outlets now, see also Luigi, Boss, Fred Perry (and Jump The Gun has the best £100 jumpers & Loake shoes that are just great & not strictly mod so don't write off)..Pullingers for shoes to add to those above, strong & varied

Apparently it is in top 20 shopping centres in UK. To me, although I really like visiting the city centre, the shops are all women's fashion and aimed at the tourists, not every day living, except loads of food shops.

The High Street shops (and shopping mall outlets) are the same as pretty much everywhere else.

Knowing where you live, you even have a door-to-door bus service, which is cheaper than driving in and parking.

Similarly, Brighton has some fantastic independent shops, worthy of a browse and the odd purchase. Considering it's supposedly the online shopping capital AND very few shop spaces are empty, I'd say Brighton is coping reasonable well.

Hanningtons was THE Brighton department store. Shame it closed.

Yeah, I know their shop and have seen the owner and his well-dressed chums many times. Again it's not my style and not my brands. My Jump The Gun comment was only semi-serious by the way. I struggle over here as well and the only place I seem to be able to get what I want is London. I mentioned earlier that I surf the net a lot for clothes and accessories and when I find something I like that is it, nothing else will do. And it usually ends up with me going to the brand's flag-ship store to buy it as few places stock it in the size I want,

That said, yourself and a number of others have pointed out some long established shops and I'm starting to think it's more me being a difficult consumer as opposed to Brighton not having any decent shops.

Brighton's shopping facilities are pitiful for a city of its size. Churchill Square is far too small, Western Road is a dump and the Lanes are vastly overrated. The single best project that could happen for Brighton is that idea of renovating the Brighton Centre to include an extension to Churchill Square. Until then, I'd rather drive to Bluewater than try and navigate central Brighton.

From someone who lives in Gary Barlow's backside, I'd say that short discourse suggests Brighton is doing something right.

Enjoy Bluewater.

You'd be better off going to either of the Westfield's in London - same sort of place and its much cheaper to get to.

Makes you wonder what is the point of these council policies if the people of Brighton would rather sit in their houses and order online than go out into our organic, pollution and car free urban green zones of vegetarianism.

Bring back cars and meat!

There are a small number of good shops (not that I've ever heard of the two you mention) but overall it's a drab experience in my opinion. It's full of rubbish that nobody in their right mind would want, much of it is dirty and the clientele leaves a lot to be desired. I've really no idea why this area is so popular. I can only presume it is because the actual streets and layout themselves are unusual and I suppose rather quaint compared to most modern cities, as it's certainly not because the shops are anything special.

I do love the way you revel in your bland mediocrity.

The people who wish to sit alone and order online can do so, and those who wish to have social discourse with society - i.e. meet people - are similarly free to do so. There's scope for both.

The irony is that I always avoid Kensington Gardens on a Saturday, not because it's shite, more than it takes forever to get to the other end.

Bring back cars and meat!

No 'bring back' about it - Brighton Sausage Company in Gloucester Road has some excellent sausages (naturally) and cuts of meat.

He's right though isn't he. Who wants to go and buy a dusty old second hand 12" record from a fat bloke with a goatee in a damp smelling shop, when you can buy a nice shiny Take That CD from an HMV superstore, perhaps picking up Tour of Duty for your xbox whilst you're there.

I went to Churchill Square yesterday for some Xmas shopping. Everything I went to buy was more expensive than what it was online...I therefore gave up and decided that the money spent on parking for 2 hours (£4) was still more expensive than the postage & packing I pay online.

Proof that there is absolutely NO point in going Xmas shopping in a shopping centre anymore unless you want to buy clothes.
