Shocking news if true, class manager who always respects the traditions of the clubs he manages. Never forget how he handled the Muamba saga, Wigan are completely delusional thinking they are going to walk the Championship in season 1.

"Asked to leave" with a little back hander I should imagine, to avoid a bigger compensation payout.

Not surprised. Shame for us though. Though saying that Whelan will probably bring in some other washed up has been :lolol:

With his promotion record I wonder whether a certain person from the South West will be getting a phone call.

If they won their game in hand, they'd be level with us and handily placed for the play-offs.

Rumour has it that a replacement had already been found for the Sheff Weds position before Jones got the boot - wouldn't be surprised if it was Coyle. They seem a perfect fit.

Wigan are more likely to end up down in league 1 than back in the premier whoever they appoint. ****ing idiots. Classic case of overachieving. Martinez kept them there against the odds now they are ****ed. Bit like Charlton and Curbishley. Panic button has been hit and theyre all in tears because they didnt know how hard the championship has become. Piddly, crappy little club anyway. They should all go and watch the rugby league side instead.

I look forward to the ubiquitous Dave Whelan popping up on TV this week preaching loyalty towards managers as he has done in the past. Always thought him to be a grade A hypocrite.

That said, Coyle going isn't that big a surprise. Whelan clearly wants Wigan to return to the Premier League at the first attempt and with Wigan currently down in 14th place having lost 3 home games in the space of 8 days, that doesn't look all that likely. He's made the move now that there is time to turn things around. I think Wigan having to play Europa League matches on Thursday nights and therefore having to play catch-up all the time has not helped their cause this season. Even so, I think people would've expected Wigan to be higher in the table considering they only lost a handful of players in the summer, brought in Grant Holt (who has been terrible) and signed Nick Powell on loan from Manchester United. With their elimination from the Europa League now looking likely, I wouldn't be surprised if they pick up after Christmas.

Would think Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday will be making a beeline for Ian Holloway and Wigan probably stand more chance of getting him, although the challenge of galvanising Wednesday and making them a force again is arguably the greater challenge. As for Coyle, I think he's one of those managers who did well at one club but has been found out elsewhere. Burnley was the high point of his career, but his lack of tactical acumen has been found out elsewhere.

Did you know that he broke his leg in the FA Cup final?

To be honest, I think this is poor from Whelan. He lost a few good players and they were replaced with average players. I dont think they can deal with playing twice a week.

Good intelligent post.Yes Wigan is a Rugby League town but IMO Coyle/Whelan undid most of the good things Martinez did at the club. With Whelans fortune and the parachute payments Coyles buys were (to say the least) poor. And its strange how the new manager at Derby was 2nd choice for the Wigan job.
