What a shambolic effort this has been. I can't believe a plodder like Peter Siddle is running through us. Let's hope Prior saves us AGAIN, because one more wicket and we're in a world of trouble.

The first innings average score in a Test match at Trent Bridge is 330, so the aim surely has to be to get as close to that as possible just to make us competitive.

Don't disagree with a lot of that, but Peter Siddle is a far better bowler than you are giving him credit for. Over 150 Test wickets to his name. Today he's bowling 85mph with good control, and getting some movement. Might not be the quickest, but he's a far better bowler than Starc and Pattinson who would make Mitchell Johnson and Saj Mahmood look tidy.

edit: FFS Prior. Now that IS giving your wicket away.

I'm hanging onto the hope that if Siddle can do this to us, then Jimmy Anderson and Steve Finn are going to run through the Aussies like a knife through soft butter

Just checked score and can't believe we won the toss and batted. Cloud cover and humid would have been ideal. What a mess to get rolled over like this. Need the bowlers to dig us out of a mess again.

The only good news is that Siddle can't bowl from both ends at once. The rest of their bowling has looked absolutely pony.

I think the turning point was Bell - he's playing with a rookie in Bairstow and not scoring at all. Just 3 scoring shots in his first 40 balls, putting all of the onus onto Bairstow's shoulders. Then Bell gets out 15 mins before tea, pressure back on and Prior's knocked over 5 mins before tea.

What is Bell's problem vs Australia? He does OK against every other nation, but is below par against the Aussies.

There's still 40 overs of play today, that was a massive wicket losing Prior. I'd have been well happy with 180-odd for 4 going into tea.

I just don't rate him to be honest. He seems like he has very little skill and tries to make up for it with effort and hard work, which is not something I admire in any sportsman. He doesn't have immense pace or a particular ability to move the ball. He certainly shouldn't have five England wickets in an Ashes Test.

England need to try and dig out a 270-280 here. I can't see it though.

Siddle is no Glenn McGrath, I agree. He's the Aussie equivalent of Darren Gough. Very similar actually - all huff and puff but no match for a class batsman and yet has an Ashes hattrick to his name.

As much as you'd like to paint him as a cricket equivalent of Tommy Fraser, its simply not true. He's a decent test match bowler, who has caused England plenty of problems in the past.

Hmm, that would suppose Finn's a better bowler than Siddle.

Don't you fancy Swann spinning this lot out on Day 5 then?

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Add in Broad and we have 3 excellent bowlers who should be able to make hay...
