I would imagine it will be even more vague than that.

The club really needs to make a statement for the fans. We have been in the dark throughout all of this and there is a lot of anger and confusion around at the moment that needs to be calmed.

I, a fan, am neither angry nor confused, and don't feel the need to be 'calmed'. But thanks for your concern anyway.

This is a surreal situation. Shut your eyes and the club could be a firm of accountants or solicitors the way they are behaving towards their allegedly errant employee. Has nobody told Barber et al that this is a FOOTBALL club, and in the world of football the other world's employment rules don't apply?

Enquiries? Disciplinary hearings? 3 weeks to appeal? What sorcery IS this?? Whatever happened to good, old-fashioned "sack and pay up"?

This just seems like another absolutely pointless statement from the board, that gives nobody any new information.

No new information that agrees with your agenda, you mean?

PUBLISHED

11:30 24th June 2013

In relation to comments made by Gus Poyet on BBC Match of the Day last night, the club would like to point out that its disciplinary panel considered the matter on the afternoon of Friday 21st June and for most of Saturday 22nd June.

The club spent much of Sunday 23rd June in discussion with Gus and his representatives. For legal reasons we cannot say anything about the content of those discussions but Gus was well aware, before he appeared on the BBC last evening, that his dismissal was pending.

It tells your that the panel's deliberations continued throughout the weekend. That is new information.
It tells you that they were in continued contact with Gus and his representative all day Sunday, and had told him the decision. He knew 100% what the decision was, just not when the statement would be released.

I'm not sure how crucial this "pending" word is.
Perhaps one of the HR experts on here could tell us what is the legal distinction between:

"We are definitely going to sack you"
and
"You have been sacked"

In both cases, it seems to me that any normal person would take this as knowing that they are losing their job (the only possible ambiguity might be the point up to which they are going to be paid) -- in which case Gus's comments on the BBC are somewhat disingenuous and effectively amount to no more than "yes, I knew I was being sacked, but I didn't know that it was with immediate effect".

Or is there a more clear-cut distinction?

Erm....." Gus was well aware that the decision was pending"

He knew, his representatives knew, the formal press release was being worded, it really looks that simple, the club look like they are in the clear.

So it was pending. There we go therefore I feel for GUS massively and they're ***** for choosing a time like that to release it

You wonder whether there is an element of pay back as, after all, Gus would often use media interviews to complain about budgets, financial ceilings etc

Exactly he knew he was sacked just not when it would be announced. He loves the media and the attention it gives him so I would imagine he loved the released statement.

Agree with this, pending or not, he was sacked in all but name and I'm sure he knew that. In some ways i think this was damage limitation by the club, they had little choice but to release the statement last night for danger of Gus saying live on TV "yeah, basically the club are going to sack me but they haven't said when yet". That would have been even more of a scoop!

pending - awaiting decision or settlement, undecided.

So, hat the club are saying is that dismissal was ON THE CARDS but no decided.

So either theyve messed up again with the sue of 'pending' or Gus is right.

Can it get worse? I wish Gus would just go away because he's making my club looks worse and worse by the day. How more PR-inept can we get.

I'm not sure how crucial this "pending" word is.

Strangely they don't say WHAT it was pending. A very carefully crafted press release that one that presents more questions than it answers. The club should have just kept quiet but there appears to be an ego in the club bigger than Gus' that just wants to have the last word. Barber / Bloom - shut the f**k up and let the appeal process start without anymore public statements from the club !

That to me says that they decided to sack him saturday evening. The communication between his representativesand the club was about the leagal side of the sacking. To me that means he knew he was sacked, he has to be a simpleton not to know.

"Pending" means the decision is contingent on something. If that contingency is merely the passage of time, then the decision is certain (let's leave aside any science fiction theories contesting this assertion). However, we don't know what the "pending" bit was - as Westdene Seagull says above.
