Having worked for many delivery companies it's amazing how many drivers turn up for work in the early hours after having a skin full the night before. Absolute madness.

It is claimed that 90% of accidents are caused by people that haven't been drinking. Therefore, why can't us 10% be left to get on with it?

Strange how attitudes change. When I was young drink driving was very common, many people did it. People would regularly have several pints and drive home. I did, and paid the price in 1972 when I was stopped by the police when I drove past them with two girls sitting on the boot of my sports car! Yes I got disqualified and yes my insurance went through the roof but none of my friends thought I was irresponsible, they just thought I was unlucky. There but for the grace of God go I was the general feeling.

Nowadays it's seen as socially unacceptable and quite right too. Not everything in the old days was better!

I will take the moral high ground and say that I never drink and drive. Not even one sip. In my opinion, anyone who does is a selfish and deserves to lose their licence. Obviously, I appreciate other people will have a different point of view, but when a someone you know has been killed by someone with booze in their system, it makes you take a harder line on the subject. As for the next morning...well, don't get pi55ed, if you know you've got to drive the next day. Simples.

Regarding morning driving after a skin full, I was told that it takes 1 hour for 1 unit of Alcohol to leave the body, so I try to work off that to make sure I am not over. However, this may have been complete miss-information (I hope not)

Though not advocating drink driving at all your last paragraph relates to a major crack down on drink driving. These check points are legal but the copper has to suspect the driver has consumed a drink by ascertaining if their breath smells, slurred speech or glazed eyes etc. The morning after if, if these people have had a good brekkie, cleaned their teeth, gone for jog etc the chances are they will show no apparent outward sign of having a skinfull the night before. This will not stop the copper from requesting a breath test. Is that right?

I think erratic driving is enough reason to suspect some form of intoxication, as Edna mentioned often times even when you feel fine your driving isn't as tidy as you think.

In theory that works but everyone processes it differently so not everyone will get rid of a unit an hour. If I knew I was up early the next day I would make sure I had no more than 4 pints based on that principle as that would take 8 hours to clear

I read somewhere it takes an average strength pint of lager 4 hours to be completely out of your system

going by that if you drank 4 pints and stopped at 10 o'clock

then back on the road at say 6/7 o'clock as most are, you'll still be over the limit,I reckon

obviously all this dépends on alot of different factors sex, weight and so on

best thing is take no risk at all

I went down to Brighton to watch the UK subs last Sunday, Bought and cuddled a bottle of Old speckeled hen from 8 until 10.15.
Got stoped in a road block at Preston park and admitted I had a bottle of bear...I was asked to give a breath test (quite rightly) well that was the scarest 3 mins in my life as I am on the road for my job.

When the PC said "thats says OK" I could of kissed her!...I will never even have 1 bottle of beer while driving now, as while waiting my heart nearly bounced out of my chest. A trully sobering moment.

They've usually decided to give a breath test anyway when they ask that, the question is asked due to artificially high readings if you have literally *just* had a drink. E.g. down a half in the Tap and out in to the car and pulled instantly; the initial breath reading will be inaccurate and possibly over the limit; after a short period of time it'll be correct and under the limit

I was once in the queue for food at the Amex and a kid asked his Dad for a Coke. His Dad said no, because he already had one, so the kid said "so what, you're getting a beer and you've already had four AND you're driving!" followed by an awkward silence

So much at risk, the lives of his children and every other innocent person on the road. So many people still drink drive, it's quite shocking.

When I worked at withdean, Dick Knight would down a bottle of red and drive after every match

It seems to me that many drivers are more concerned about losing their licences / jobs as a result of drink driving, than the heartache and destruction of killing/maiming someone.
