Brilliant thread only ever went a few times as a kid but loved it. I seem to remember a builder who worked at our house in Burgess Hill who was meant to play for the Tigers I'm sure from memory he was Hungarian anyone any idea who he was.

Sad news, ex-Brighton Tiger star Bob Mcneil ( 1960's ) passed away this week at home in Canada.

Neil Robert McNeil "Bob" enjoyed his time with the team and his adventures in Britain. I am one of his nephews, Dale McNeil. I understand from other posts about the Tigers that he was in the lineup for the final game. I have a shortcut to a short article after his death. I hope that those that may have known Bob, or have the same love of hockey that he did, will enjoy it.

Those that surf the web can also find an obituary posted in the Toronto Star, Canada.

Thank you for the post, Bob McNeil sounded like a truly great competitor and much admired by his contemporaries. Thoughts with your family.

Also do get in touch with Walt Jabsco on here as he is attempting to write a book about the Brighton Tigers, and I'm sure he would love to chat about memories, photos etc.

Those were the days when the Tigers were the tops, queues stretched up almost to the clock tower, the picture of the Stadium brought back many memories, joining the queue around 5.30pm standing on the ground floor for the match then going onto the ice to skate until around 10.30,there was no extra charge to skate. In the 50`s the team were Canadians who had played at a good level, however the standard of players fell as clubs cut back on costs teams had to include British players, a couple to start with but more later this had an effect on the standard of play so I was not too upset when the stadium closed. There was only one league so no promotion or relegation, the small number of clubs meant that we got to know our opponents very well,Wembley had two clubs Lions and Monarchs then there was Streatham,Earls Court Rangers,Harringay Greyhounds and Nottingham Panthers whose star Centre Ice was Chick Zamick who came nearest to our own Bobby Lee.

There should be plenty of stuff in here if you search through.

Failing that, Google search "Brighton Tigers Ice Hockey Wayne Hardman."
He's the man to talk to about The Brighton Tigers (and The Brighton B52S.)

Great thread. I never realised Brighton had an Ice Hockey team (well before my time anyway).

Used to go watch the London Knights at the Docklands when I still lived down south (before they folded anyway).

Then moved up north and watched the Newcastle Vipers (again before they folded), and now Whitley Warriors (still going).

I love the sport. British ice hockey is going strong. The Elite league(the top division in the UK) gets good crowds.

Looks like the closest teams to Sussex now are either in Kent or Hampshire (NIHL)

My late sister used to be a regular going every week to skate at the SS. Occasionally she took me, all I could manage was to cling onto the side and pull myself round. I do remember she loved the place and there seemed to be a great crowd there. Cant remember if she ever saw the Tigers but do remember her always raving about them also being heartbroken when the place closed down. I don't know if I'm getting confused now but she used to talk about a group called Peter and the headliners does anyone know anything about them were they local.

When I used to go I usually ended up in the bar overlooking West Street at the end. There was always a good local rock band on but the only one I can remember was fronted by Bobby Samsom.

If anyone is interested, the British ice hockey team play in a qualifying tournament today & over the next few days - the winner goes to the Winter Olympics next year. Britain havent made it since 1948, and are the lowest ranked team of the 4 competing (Latvia, France & Kazakhstan are the others) - but it would be great if they managed it this time. ESPN are showing it live @ 5.30pm today & Radio 5 Live Sports Extra have live commentary too.

* Great piece about Bob McNeil btw....Had to laugh at the quote about beating up cancer with a hockey stick, & love the story of the autographed poster too.

Was fortunate enough to have lunch with a former Brighton Tiger last week. Brilliant bloke.

Got a load of programmes I am uploading to my website over the next week as well. Will post when they go up.

I just cannot understand why the council won't push for a new ice arena. Having The Untouchables back would be monumental. I'm sure we could fill a 10,000 seat stadium. There must be some funding out there somewhere. 'The Bengals Stadium', sounds good doesn't it.
