No deterrent-

The law does not act as an effective deterrent. If someone decides they want to murder somebody, they don't reconsider because it's illegal to commit murder. If someone want's to use drugs, or worse is addicted to drugs, laws will not stop them. The law will remedy an injured party, provide justice, and when someone has been harmed that is right and proper. But to write a law in order to "put people off" committing crime, it is not the way to go.

If you really want to deal with crime then you have to deal with it's causes. When we say we will be "tough on crime" or "tough on drugs" etc and we increase sentences etc, what we are trying to do is make people fear the law, fear is not the motivator that is going to bring about a law abiding and decent society, it's a quick, cheap and politically popular approach, but it doesn't solve the problem, it just allows us to continue to ignore the more fundamental and underlying causes of the problem.

We have a totally misguided approach to the use of force, our careless misuse of law actually makes our society a whole lot worse. When the law is misused people lose respect for the law in general.

"When law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect for the law." - Frederic Bastiat

Addicts aren't some alien species ffs. They're human beings who are ILL. We should look after them rather than judge them. I have worked in Hospitals long enough to know how insidious and miserable addiction is.

Just thank God if you aren't an addict ( if you're not one) and try and look beyond this idiotic idea that addiction is a lifestyle choice. It isn't and never was.

You may wish to also accept that many addicts by virtue of their 'condition' are also habitual criminals, burglars, muggers, shoplifters, NHS care recipients, abuses of their children and lifetime recipients of state benefits and unlikely to be productive at any period of their addiction.

Just for balance you know .........

A safe drug room have been around my home city for years. Was never much of an issue for those nearby....granted its not in a high res area but people do still live around it. THe area around there cleaned up alot since with less drug mess i.e used needles.

On the homophobic point, our reputation certainly precedes us!On t'cruise last week, we were in the bar and one of the waiters, a Turkish chap obviously picked up our accents and started a bit of banter ..." awright mate" etc etc...he then asked me what part of the UK I came from and I said " Brighton". Now assuming this guy hardly had any English at all and only followed British football because of Turkish players...his response to this was...showing me the limp wrist gesture!!!!! I was amazed and then, another waiter, from Venezuela also did the same. I was amazed that firstly they had heard of brighton, but only because we represented the gay community.

I'm in a tiny settlement in NZ a population of 650. 68 miles from the nearest town and when I say to people where i'm from they know exactly the reputation that Brighton has. Find it quite amusing really.

Yep I get that in NZ too, which I find odd considering the national sport is a bunch of macho men rolling around in the mud touching each other's @rses

I wonder what percentage of people who think this is a good idea, smiled and cheered at a great leaders passing last week. Probably in excess of 90%, I would bet my balls on it.

You sure you don't want to ban betting ?

Not sure if i am reading your post correctly but to me it suggests that if we can clean up a load of users we can also ease a load of the social issues you list.

There is no down side to getting users clean so surely trying alternatives to the current system which doesn't work must be a good idea.

Yes, but the discussion is on whether this initiative is likely to succeed and whether there might be consequences and my post was in response to LeighGulls rather naive and selective profile of users.

I think you'll find Mrs T may have been behind an initiative such as this. In the early 80's her administration pushed the idea of providing users with clean syringes through the NHS, the idea being that it was better to help people control their habit than ostracise them.

That said, she was as mad as a box full of ferrets. You're probably right.

like other people have said - there is no way Brighton could not be more of a magnet for smackheads anyway. relying on the police to chase after people and a few well meaning vicars round the london road handing out soup has got us no where. cant believe all the lock em up merchants. one real problem that the town has and people are looking at ways to fix it. next time your up the county with your kid in pain and you are behind some cnt who has OD'ed, just think yeah I am glad he done that in a basement in st james's street and caused mayhem.

I think this is the first thing you have ever posted which I agree with.

Edited my post so as not to stir it up, I was interested as I saw nothing snide in the post but as you say no reason to elaborate in public.

It wasn't meant to be. I agree with what you wrote and wanted to say so in a slightly humorous manner. Upon re-reading I can see where you're coming from though; I should have put a  at the end. No offence meant.

My main concern is this will attract much more users and addicts to the town instead of help the existing existing problem in the town

It's a disgusting awful idea. It won't stop drug related crime to get hold of the stuff in the first place. Or are the Greens supplying that as well.

Yet more 'right on' nonsense from the Greens. Sorry, but this will potentially attract more users to the area and it won't solve any of the crimes committed by the users to facilitate their addiction.
