M25 Speed Cameras

I read somewhere recently that the cameras havent been working properly for the last 2 years. So no one has ever been fined by the cameras over the gantries in the last 2 years. Apparently they are currently updating but money has run out and for now, no fines.
It wouldn't surprise me as they're run by Mouchel who've been having a lot of problems for two years.

I cover the M23 -> M4 stretch of the M25 in both directions pretty regularly, and I may, ahem, occasionally stray above 70mph. I've never had a ticket.

That said, I've never noticed a flash for me or any other motorist either.
Really? I see them flashing cars on the other side pretty much every time I use the m25 and have done since they installed them about ten years ago.

Has anyone ever got a speeding ticket from one of these? I mean the Gasto ones on the overhead gantries and not the average speed ones usually through roadworks. I was traveling home after the game on Saturday going clockwise on the M25 and was flashed somewhere between the A3 and M4 exists. I was doing more than 80 but less than 100...

I thought they didn't work unless the speed limit signs were illuminated i.e. a variable speed limit was in place. ???

I drive this stretch of motorway nearly every weekend and have never been flashed before.

Guess I'll just be bricking it everytime I get some post over the next 2 weeks or so.

Same here, i always travel with the speedo on 80 on motorways (which is about 76 true speed) and i got flashed on Saturday as well for the first time some where between Leatherhead and Chertsey going clockwise.

Wasn`t sure if i was flashed but there was a motor that went passed me like i was standing still at the time but it went off 2-3 times.

Just have to wait and see what the postie brings.

When they were first installed, the "joke" was tha on a careless day you could lose your license between M3 and M4 with so many speed cameras at 3 points per flash

The only time I've ever got a ticket for motorway speeding was about 7 years ago when I first came across the average speed camera areas. Early Sunday morning, deserted motorway with a speed limit of 50, got done for doing about 58. Certainly concentrates my mind when I drive through them now.

I have a semi related question related to speeding. If you have an older car, how do you make sure your speedo is calibrated properly? I imagine you could use a sat nav but I know they can be imprecise.

Does anyone know whether there's a tolerance on those average speed sections? Would you get done for doing 44 in a 40 section?

In the two years I commuted to and from Hertfordshire using both clockwise and anti-clockwise routes I never saw a single one flash even when they were working overnight and the matrix signs were set to 30mph with people flying through them

I commuted between junctions 9 and 11 in rush hour for a couple of years and was rarely in a position to speed.

I think that the way they are designed means that if their accuracy diminishes, then they over-read more (that's how come I once had an indicated 120mph+ past Roedean in a Maestro van with ladders on it).

Sat navs are pretty accurate if you're on a fairly straight bit of road.

Cheers HP, that makes sense. What I meant to say was sat navs can be imprecise when they (start to) lose their signal. I wonder if they're admissible as evidence?

According to my son the cameras only work when the variable speed limit sign is shown on the M25 but did notice going to Nottingham on Saturday that they flashed in front of us a few times when cars sped through the signs, hence son stuck to the limit when they were on

I've been driving from the M23 to junction 14 for 3 years now. Up until 3 or 4 weeks ago I had never seen them flash.

Now I see them flash daily. I've noticed people's driving habits have changed to. Drivers brake and slow down before going through them now.

The cameras that flash are newer. They're bigger on top of the gantry, have a stand alone flash gun and have a green light on the back of them as you approach them. The old box type don't seem to be flashing.

Unless they have changed the cameras over from the old ones where the variable limit from J10 is in place, you won't get a fine.

From February 15th this year, some of the cameras were converted to digital instead of film. The speed at which they catch people will also drop from 90 to 79.

I'm not convinced they're catching people yet though.

The guidance on speed setting for cameras (which is observed in most areas BUT NOT Dorset or Wales) is speed limit +10% +2MPH so in a 30 the camera should trigger at 35MPH and a 70 limit at 79 MPH...... Most car speedos over-state your speed by 2 MPH (Stops people suing the manufacturers for speeding fines).

I have never heard anyone being ticketed on the Western VS zones however the 50 MPH cameras are live as you approach the Dartford crossing. I have had 14 of our drivers caught there..... the lowest speed that received a ticket there was 68MPH.
