Ahhhhh, I'd forgotten all about that particular slice of Keane thuggery. Mind you, there were that many fellow pro's he assaulted & stamped on it's hardly surprising. A loathsome, cowardly wanker. He was a great player though (when he wasn't behaving like an unhinged tosser). I bet his breath stinks 'n' all.

Roy Keane was clearly drunk tonight.

Awful pundit and that's why he has to sit next to Adrian Chiles on ITV instead of being on Sky like the brilliant G-Nev.

Ball coming over his head, goes to turn and bring it down. Every player would have done the same.

Worst red I've seen in some considerable time.

Frankly who gives a shit? Turned radio 5 on when got back to the car post game. You'd have thought there'd been a murder on the pitch. Get over it you arm chair glory hunters. Your team isn't disciplined enough to play with 10, tough shit

Firstly, I was listening to the RAdio Sussex commentary of the Brighton match.... THATS the most important game tonight. When I saw the sending off later, I thought, well, you CAN see why he was sent off. Its not a cert red, and most probably a yellow generally, but the ref is there to make a call, and from some angles it looks like a kung fu kick.... so, its not an UNREASONABLE red. Boot up, connect with the opponent, in Europe? WHy are people bleating and acting as if its a disgraceful decision? Its nothing of the sort - its a reasonable decision, and the ref is there to call it.... which he did. So, off he went. And now it seems the entire ITV panel, and most of the british football punditry are crying about it being a terrible decsion... which it wasnt.

Red card, or not? If it is it would seem that overhead kicks are banned.

What I found funny was Southgate and I think it was Dixon being adamant it was not a red card. Then when Keane said it was, they just shut up. It was like they were scared of him!

Nani knew what he was doing. Red card.

I don't think Nani knew what was going to happen but, spin it round, swap shirt colours and suppose that Arbeloa did that to Nani ? Would Fergie have complained if he WASN'T red carded ? you bet !
I could imagine the post match interview " Tackles like that have no place in the modern game....... That could have ended Nani's career.......... the referee should have been stronger but bottled it...." etc etc.

What goes around comes around.........

The overhead kick example is different in my opinion. That is a the flat face of the boot(the top). Even if that hits you, it's nowhere near as bad at the studs making contact.

Nani's foot planted onto Arbeloa studs-up.

Of COURSE Nani is going for the ball. Of COURSE he had no intention of making contact with Arbeloa, but he did, and it was dangerous. Most red cards are the player 'going for the ball'....they just do it wrong.

No where in the rules is the word 'intent' uttered. It is blankely "If you are endangering the opponent". To me, that endangered Arbeloa, whether intentional or not.

Of course, my view is completely in the minority, but that's the joy of footy opinions. Just a different side to the argument. I can completely see where the anger is and I understand why people don't think it is red. All I'm saying is, on a technicality, it could be a red.

I think the studs up is the point that got him the red, not necessarily the height.

If Nani does that tackle at knee height, people complain how it's a leg breaking tackle etc. The fact it was up just above his hip surely doesn't suddenly make it not so bad?! On first watch live I thought yellow fair enough, upon seeing the ref you can see why he gave the red. That doesn't mean I think it's a dead cert red without a shadow of a doubt, however Nani has given the ref the option to send him off in fairness.

Pretty much what I thought. I don't think it's a definite red but I don't see how people can seriously complain that going into a challenge with your studs facing a player at least 4ft off the floor isn't a red card

Looked a marginal red to me in real time, especially as Nani appears to follow through with his leg a bit rather than his leg naturally retracting. It was a stupid attempt to control the ball, which intentionally or not ended up being dangerous. He could have easily headed it on, or not tried to be such a flashy prick.
