Pork pie land.
I'm praying for a Michael Howard esque lurch to the right. There would be absolutely no chance of the Tories gaining a majority at the next election. Cameron was the first leader that they've had since Major that is (sort-of) electable.

All the Thatcher worshipers seem to forget that had it not been for Michael Foot's "longest suicide note in history" manifesto , she wouldn't have won a second term. A lurch to the right suits The Labour Party & to lesser degree The Liberals just fine.

Do you not realise that outside the pink walls of Brighton, the general mood in this country is becoming more right-wing in the sense of being anti-Europe and anti-imigration? As most people are suffering financially, and Labour will be a sure bet to waste even more on benefits and tax cuts to buy votes, I suspect they will win next time. It is a sad fact in a democracy, that voters never vote for what is best for the country, only themselves.

I hate this government but we can argue all day long who can fix it, should it be this party, that party, it's Labour's fault, it's Osbournes fault. Who can fix the recession? It matters not a jot. This country is not in a recession. It's in decline. The quicker people are more honest and acknowledge this fact the quicker we can start to sort out the problem.

Your right it is in decline. The scary thing is, I don't feel it is ever going to get any better than this.

What goes around comes around. We were in deeper shit before Mrs T got a grip and turned our fortunes around by smashing the cancer of the unions.

We need another strong leader, who deals with the important issues, and not just if two blokes are uoset that they cannot wed.

Just look at Japan as an example of what you are talking about, they had 20 years of stagflation from the early 90's, growth basically wasn't possible in the conditions they had. We share a lot of significant economic problems with the Japanese, the most crucial of which being a lack of natural resources, resulting in a over reliance on importing.

However, the good news is that they are now out of it and whilst living standards did decrease gradually, they remain one of the top 5 economies in the world.

Wasn't it Mrs T that ended manufacturing in this country as a meaningful contribution to our GDP?

Wasn't it Mrs T that established the financial sector as the main stay of our economy?

Because that all worked didn't it...???

We will collapse, like The Romans because the top 1% would rather see economical collapse and watch the citizens suffer disgusting poverty than give up their right to the money they feel is owed to them. All other civilisations in history have written off debt periodicly except us and The Romans. Our problem is that capitalism is worldwide, there is no other model to fall back on anymore. The world is ruled by capitalists. We are collapsing and whatever government gets in power, it will only get worse at an increasing rate. We're done basically.

This doc explains it very well (no crackpot theories, just sound analytical study presented in a digestable format), full film available on Youtube too.

Why do you always have to have some form of homophobic dig? The "pink walls" of Brighton have absolutely sod all to do with the point you are making. "Green walls" maybe

I understand what you are saying and I think you may have a point but I reckon without Cameron the two wings of the Tory party would be tearing themselves apart even more so than it is at the moment. I really don't think UKIP will poll particuarly well at the GE for the genuine fear of people wasting their vote. In much the same way that the Liberals were polling numbers far higher than they got in the last election. People lose their bottle when it comes to voting at GE's.

Perhaps not. Possibly it was Labour.

Decline in manufacturing greater under Labour than with Thatcher - FT.com

The salient point being:

Manufacturing accounted for more than 20 per cent of the economy in 1997, when Labour came to power critical of the country having too narrow an industrial base. But by 2007, that share had declined to 12.4 per cent.

Ouch.

Ouch.

From 1997 onwards new technology based industry bit into manafacturing and it naturally declined, no fault of labour. Thatcher systematically dismantled UK's manafacturing industry. Big difference.

What a load of bollox! Look at our car industry now, it is thriving. She cleared out the cancer of Red Bobbo and his like, and created an environment where inward investment could be obtained, and enabled industry ti thrive.

There was nothing wrong with the financial sector on her watch. That was down to Gordon the moron and Tony the liar, removing all controls from them in the beliefe that they could finance their utopian dream of low taxes, massive hand-outs and no need to make expenditure on the Public Sector realistically related to GDP.

So if I understand correctly, when manufacturing declines under the Tories it's all their fault. But when Labour are in control, it's none of theirs. Okay.

It must be wonderful to have such devotion to a party. Personally I think they're all useless overall. There are some policies I prefer that are Tory and some which are Socialist. I'd like to believe more in our parties, but in my eyes they've all failed.

If anyone wants to check quite how right-wing UKIP are, Farage is describing "man of a thousand cuts" Cameron as a Social Democrat.

UKIP is a vehicle for a mid-term protest vote...nothing more

Just been an amusing interview on C4 News with an Interview asking an UKIP voter about their vote and being told this was the second time he'd voted for them and he'd previously been a non-voter. Whern asked if he thought UKIP were a credible party of government, however, the same voter replied not a chance !

I have no love for Labour and less for Torys. In fact all politicians have failed. What I do believe in however, is call ing it like it is. Britains industry changed drastically, it happened to do this during the perios Labour were in power. But I gues that doesn't fit in with many agendas on here.

There are no British owned volume car manufacturers and de-regulation of finance started in the 80's along with 15% interest rates.

are you aware that the Mini plant makes more cars now than it did in the 70s. but with a quater of the workforce. in fact the whole of the manufacturing sector is larger now than then, just with a smaller workforce. thats the trouble with technology and innovation, it reduces the need for people.

Which tends to suggest the problem with the British motor car industry in previous decades was it's management not it's workforce.
