With all the bad press around horse meat, thought why not give it a go. Ordered a couple of Tenderloins at half the price of the beef equivalent. Verdict - some of the sweetest succulent meat I've ever tasted...

Your verdict was similar to mine after my first dalliance at boarding school at the age of 16.

The miser in me is interested, but I have some weird, subconscious reaction to the thought of eating horse meat which would stop me trying it. I don't like horses, and have eaten odd things in the past, but the thought of eating them is just too strange. Completely irrational I know.

I quite often eat horsemeat when i am in France. At first i just wanted to try it out of curiosity (as i own two horses) but now i'll buy it from the supermarket in steak form and cook it on the George Forman as i would a normal cow steak. Its quite tasty, although a noteable difference in taste to beef.

I'm in exactly the same posittion, I don't really like dog's or cat's but I wouldnt dream about eating them.

I think one main reason for people's aversion to horse meat (and cat/dog/etc.) is that they are perceived as pets rather than food sources.

Similar happens sometimes when a family rear a pig (for example, or chickens and so on) and then when it comes to slaughter/eat, they all decide against it.

Once there's a detachment in place (from both being pet type animals and from rearing any animal themselves) then I think people are more comfortable about eating them.

When it comes to horse meat, I'm not sure how I'd feel about eating them (knowingly of course!). I guess it would come down to knowing that it was safe, if they'd been reared appropriately etc. i.e. not via criminal gangs, stolen horses, diseased etc. Maybe next time I'm in the butchers, I'll ask them their slant on it - they tend to know where meat comes from more than the meat counter at Tescos! :D Basically, I'd give it a go if they'd been treated ethically.

I was in Italy back in October and on our last day we decided to go for a meal before making our way to the airport. Three of us ordered steak. When it arrived at the table, we all looked at it, then one another, all with the same reaction; "that doesn't look like beef". We all tucked in nonetheless, convinced it was horse and by the time we had finished all three plates were clean.

If my horse loving daughter see's this thread, I anticipate a lot of unexplainable deaths involving a sharp nail file.
Including me.

I don't really like horses, they're arrogant bastards.

I always feel a bit sorry for squid, just because they don't have 4 legs and faces people don't give a shit about them. If there was a horse and a squid about to take a bullet and I could only save 1, I'd choose the squid every time.
