Why don't British players have great nicknames

"Razor" Ruddock is perhaps a little more in the same vein as "The Dagger", although judging by the size of him now "Mallet" might be a more accurate nickname

Came from the boxer, Donovan "Razor" Ruddock though, I imagine.

Bu bu but. It should be standard. Everyone else just calls him Spanish Dave.

Inexplicably, I couldn't help hearing that last line in Donny Osmond's voice.

"And they call him Spanish Daaaaaave
Do you think he'll ever know?"

It's in our British nature, we're more reserved than other countries. If someone excels at something our first reaction isn't to give them a fancy name or lavish praise on them for being superhuman - we just give them some stick for being a show-off!

Quite right too.

When you have a back four with first names like Bert, Alf, Harry and Frank you don't need nicknames.

Not saying any are great but how about : -

Stanley Matthews = Wizzard of Dribble
Peter Crouch = Two metre Peter or beanpole
Wayne Rooney = Shrek

ok I concede defeat :)

I suppose perhaps there is a difference between nicknames the players give themselves and those awarded to them by fans.

I don't suppose Vicente walks around the changing room shaking new team-mates' hands and saying "Hi, I'm the Dagger"; equally I doubt very much Dean Wilkins has ever thought of setting up a Twitter account in the name of wendy4

Apparently, Paul Ince gave himself the nickname, the Guvnor.

Everybody seems to have forgotten the finest footballer nickname ever. Kenny Lunt, who was known as Lenny.

Cheeky stuff, cheeky stuff!

Actually, I always liked the Celtic wing-wizard Jimmy Johnstone's nickname (Jinky): but West Brom fans went one better imo - after his namesake Willie tested positive for a banned stimulant & was referred to thereafter as Junkie.

Only country in the world (except perhaps Eire) where you'll hear conversations along the lines of: "Meet my friend John - he's a twat."

Always thought it was a travesty that Dean Holdsworth was never nicknamed "Reg"
