Maybe we'll see a return to the unbalnced midfield which we deployed when we won the league. Seemed to work well enough then.

Buckley------Hammond------Bricuttt---Orlandi

I would go with that but with CMS between the midfield four and Ulloa. ina 4 -4-1-1 formation.

Start the game with both CMS and Ulloa with either Buckley or Lopez you could not start the game with both and leave your top scorer on the side lines having bought the man to help him score more goals.

Our top scorer is also going to be our top bench warmer for a while. I really cannot see him trying to play the 2 of them together. Ulloa up top on his own for me, 2 of Lopez / LuaLua / Buckley on either wing, Bridcutt, Hammond and Orlandi across the middle.

The trouble with "our top scorer" is he's missed a hatful of sitters, and has no first touch.

Ulloa, Vicente, Orlandi, Barnes are now ahead.

I think that there will be one of the three wide men you mentioned named and the other two on the bench. All of them are 45 min players none of them produce the goods over 90 mins so 1 will get named and then 1 or both of the others will come on late in the game.I think that Ulloa has been brought in to complement CMS style of play rather than instead of him. Gus has continually stressed he will build our attack around CMS.

That's because CMS is such a sensitive confidence player, with all the speculation about looking for strikers, Gus has had to keep his spirits up and not let him feel like he's being replaced.

The fact of the matter is, he's being replaced.

This 4-4-1-1 is arguably a 4-2(Bridcutt+Hammond)-3-1 as we'll have deep lying CMs and is FAR more likely than anything else.

BUT

I could imagine a back 3 though with wing backs if Gus is brave enough. Something like

-------------------Kooshak-------------------
--------El-Abd------Greer------Dunk---------- ________(Van Dijk please!)
Lopez----------------------------------Bridge
-------------------Bridcutt-------------------
----------------------------------------------
-----Buckley--------Orlandi--------LuaLua-----
---------------------Ulloa---------------------

I realise no CMS but either he or Barnes could start in LuaLua's position if we don't think he's earnt a chance in starting role. I think he's been exceptional both wide and centrally lately though.

Erm that doesn't look unbalanced to me?

Anyway...

CMS doesn't have the technical ability to play any role in midfield IMO, that includes behind the striker (4-4-1-1 style). Anyone arguing Barnes doesn't either.. Barnes has a bit more, has much better link up play and is mentally better IMO. Also has the knack of being in the right places and times his runs well. I don't think CMS would offer much out wide either unless we're counter attacking? And even then could be a liability with his lack of control. I'm presuming most of his goals for posh were once he was in behind the defence, and defenders in this league are much more competent than in League 1.

Only role I feel he could work well in is a front 2 with Ulloa, were there are knock downs for him to move onto. From out wide I don't think he can make that impact.

Think it may be about going back to the unbalanced formation like the league 1 title season. Just this one will be unbalanced unlike the one above ;). Go with CMS and Ulloa as a front 2. Then Bridcutt sitting as usual, and Buckley playing almost a roaming role on the right but also playing through the middle and towards the front 2, maybe like Bennett used to? Then Orlandi can take up a CM role, but needs to play towards the left side of the pitch a bit more, to cover where the gap in the formation down the left side.

---------------------Bridcutt----------------

-----------------------------Orlandi---------

--------Buckley------------------------------

------------------Ulloa -- CMS---------------

Hammond or Crofts would then play either alongside Orlandi or Bridcutt, changing defensive/attacking roles depending on the team we'd be playing against. Bruno and Bridge would obviously given license to bomb on down the wings, and take the outside of Buckley and Orlandi who can play wide or narrow depending on the space during the game.

And this is all down to Gus saying he's building the team around CMS, if I were manager, I'd scrap the above and play Ulloa in our current system instead of him.... Or at least with Vicente/Dobbie/Barnes behind Ulloa as other posters suggested.

Well what it was meant to represent was Buckley wide on the right, with Bridcutt Hammond and Orlandi playing as the three central players in there normal roles, but no wide left man, but it was fairly difficult to show on here!

I think you could be right. We played 4-3-1-2 in League One but the 1 was a winger.

So....

Kuszczak
Bruno - Greer - El-Abd - Bridge
Bridcutt
Hammond - Orlandi
Buckley ----------------------
Ulloa - Mackail-Smith

In League One it was usually a wide left winger in Noone or LuaLua. I guess Buckley could play left or right in this shape.

As others have said, a diamond midfield also possible, you never know, Dobbie could find himself spearheading that as its his main position.
