Beware of shopping in Comet. Lots of old stock, the staff are not deliberately misleading (just ignorant) and their bargains are not really bargains but overpriced junk.

They could bang out all their old stock at rock bottom prices. As far as I could see that is all they are worth. Old technology when I looked to buy a new computer. (e.g. who is going to buy a laptop computer without USB 3 and a HDMI socket for more than £150?)

I feel sorry for all those potentially out of a job but Comet really is an awful chain of shops. I'm not surprised they're struggling.

I'm sorry I didn't explain my whole thought process for you, of course it was thought about but me posting about how worried I am about it on a football message board won't do much so I didn't bother, and looked at any positives.

This!

I wouldn't buy a lightbulb from Comet, the quality of their items is appalling, all they care about is selling after sales insurance.

Isn't there a risk buying anything once they go into admin that you wont have a shop to return it to when it inevitably breaks?

Excellent. I really need a new computer and was planning to buy one in the next week or so. I'll think I'll hold on and see what happens to Comet.

I am in the same position. But even there top of the range stuff at half the price on offer would not be a good buy. The local Co-op supermarket had better buys for laptops and TVs. It was that bad.

Waiting for a new computer. Probably wait until the new year.

Absolutely this. A couple of years ago I wanted a new fridge and freezer. Looked at prices online from various places and then went to Comet. They had what I wanted but were a bit more expensive. I asked the salesman if, as I was buying two items, they would give me a discount and free delivery. Manager came over and told if I didn't like the price then tough - no discount and no price match with the internet. I walked to Currys just down the road - exactly the same products for exactly the same price. They were more than willing to negotiate and I ended up getting the products at 5% below the best internet prices I'd found, free delivery and free extended warranty. Comet only have themselves to blame for their demise !!!!!

I'd be interested to understand your point here - I did buy a tele from Comet about a year ago. The price was very competitive, even with online retailers, and we had them chuck in quite a few extras. Surely it's the same model tele as was on sale anywhere else?

Note - I agree with some of the broader points, I've ended up leaving there with stuff I'm not sure I wanted at some sort of apparent discount due to their nebulous sales techniques. Still didn't fall for the 'very high quality' 1.5m HDMI cable trick though...

Where would you recommend out of interest? I'm no computer wizard, I just want a bog standard PC or laptop for about £500.

You'll get reasonable value from places like PC World ( in the big scheme of things most PCs are more or less the same nowadays from a base build perspective ) BUT you need to know the spec you want and what you want it for as the sales people will try to up sell to you. If you're not technically intelligent then take a friend who is PC knowledgeable to prevent any bullshit from them.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. Sod Comet then.

Same position.

I have £500 budget all inclusive as I might want to buy an external hard disc for back-ups.

I feel more comfortable with desktops. And I want a small format one. I went to PCWorld to have a look and I did not fancy lots of them. I am traditional and wanted a separate desktop box, not built into the Monitor, in case the monitor went up the shoot.

Minimum specs are i5 (or equivalent) HDMI and USB 3. I am not an expert either as technology is moving too fast. I do not know if the solid state hard discs are best or not? Reliability is the key as hard discs have moving parts. Check noise of the fan. They are meant to be quiet nowadays.

I get EMail alerts and about once a month a promising computer comes up for sale. But I am still holding fire from buying one.

Dell are reliable, probably more so than Medion.

Any tips and suggestions welcome to me as well.
