A comment from another acquaintance of mine who is Libyan, and also lives in Tripoli:

"My deepest condolences to the family of Chris Stevens and the American people. This was an attack on the American embassy and the Libyan people on equal levels. This isnt the teachings of Islam nor the Libyan people. Lets not deviate and say this the result of the revolution.... lets take this and build on it. I want to see a crack down from the government and i want Saudi Arabia to focus less on our restructuring. I don't want Libyans to say there ashamed because those werent Libyans. I want to see a campaign from the government and a civilized reaction to condemn these actions from the Libyans. We need to see this done now, not tomorrow or the day after. Chris Stevens was a humble man who roamed the streets of Libya like any citizen , ate bazeen with his hands and loved the country and culture, lets show those bastards what Libyans are really like. Im open to any ideas and willing to join in any initiative."

Fahd Ben Halim,Tripoli, 12/08/12.

Not the most eloquent, but then English is his second language. But he doesn't seem to think we shouldn't necessarily holding this against Libya, but against seriously misguided extremists who are not in the majority. Lets hope the authorities grab this by the scruff of the neck.

Do you think it would be ok for me to go around killing Islamists if they insulted my god?

Of course it is not OK, and neither is what has happened.

The point I am failing miserably to make is that everybody knows what a fragile place the middle east is and the smallest thing can set things off. If one sets out to deliberately stir things up, knowing the likely consequences, surely they bear some responsibility?

What p****s me off is that we give aid to these countries. Stop the aid and use the 0.8% (or whatever it is ) of our GDP money that is spent on overseas aid spend it on useful infrastructure projects here.

Of course they do, I think because you keep saying the filmmakers deserve some form of punishment, which, yes, they may have known it would cause controversy, but it's also the Americans freedom of speech to do so

You wouldn't want to be a stand-up comedian in Libya, as soon as you tell a joke that's slightly controversial you'll hear someone cocking their shotgun.

I agree but hope the filmmakers are held to account for what their actions have caused, which was probably their intention after all.

Why what have they done wrong ?

Seems the man responsible for the movie attacking the Muslim Faith that has kicked off all this violence is the Florida Pastor Terry Jones who threatened to burn the Koran on 911 last year. This was his way of marking this years 911 anniversary.
He now seems to be America's greatest threat to National Security

Pork pie land.
All those bleating on about helping the rebels in Syria would be well advised to take note of this, and events in Egypt.

The only effect of regime change in the Middle East is "The Muslim Brotherhood" gaining power.

Remember as David Cameron said it is our moral duty to send aid overseas. What a joke!!

A large part of overseas aid is to stabilise countries around the world, something like the Arab Spring is a once in a century event and nothing was going to stop it but many civil wars and larger wars have been avoided across the world by overseas aid from rich countries.
The US helped kick Russia out of Afghanistan but they did not continue to support the country with aid, that left a gap that the Taliban filled and then AQ were able to use it as a worldwide base. If overseas aid had been used properly in Afghanistan we would never have needed to go to war there in 2001. How much has the war cost there compared with aid we should have given them.

'The same will happen in Syria because for whatever reason the West is again supporting the Islamic extremist & terrorist rebels'

Keeps the game going.

What you have right now though is normal people attacking embassies due to massive provocation from this film. This all happened last night as a reaction, it's not a terrorist attack that's been planned for years.

I understand what you're saying. The film makers were well aware of what they were doing. People can shout 'freedom of speech' but that doesn't change the reality of the situation. There are certain words/topics that we can't freely speak about in the West. If someone made an overtly racist film, it would be banned and people would find it repugnant. It might be seen as an incitement to violence. In Muslim nations insulting the prophet Mohamed is seen as equally repugnant.

I'm not in any way trying to justify the actions. I'm completely irreligious. The fact is the people who made this film were aware that there would be consequences and must bear some responsibility. What was their ultimate goal?
