How long do they keep for and how can you tell if the garlic is going off ?

I normally use garlic paste but find fresh garlic so much better.

It will be very obvious when garlic is unusable. Soggy/very soft, and probably going black. If it's sprouting a bit green at the top it will still be ok to use.

Dry and airy... I use a clay flowerpot on a non-sunny shelf in the kitchen. But then I go through a head or more of it a week....

If it does sprout, don't use the green bit. It's very bitter.

If you have lots of it then store it dry, hung up as the frogs do it..... There are plenty of youtube clips to show you a lot quicker than I could explain it to you.

Weird tip but it works. As above give it a bit of air but throw the skin back in the pot. Not the skin round the cloves but the very dry skin around the bulb. After a while you build up a lot and I store the cloves in there. Bit like hamster bedding for garlic. I discovered this by accident years ago. My garlic never goes mouldy and I often use cloves that are months old.

Plaiting it just like onions can be a bit of an art form. Looks lovely if you can do a good job though.

I will be growing loads at my allotment and will string it up when it's ready... It practically lasts forever if kept dry and airy. It doesn't need to be kept in the fridge, ever!

I've heard horseradish is easy to grow and make into a sauce.

Indeed it is easy to grow and I love it.... Grow it somewhere that you can control it though as it takes over everything in a similar way to mint will, given the chance!

I've thought about growing it but I can get it so cheaply in markets up here I can't be bothered.

Tastes completely different grown from an allotment and there are many more varieties to try. December 21st is the best date to plant it.
