....is the title of a new book being released soon to mark the game's 20th anniversary.

It features a compilation of FM-addiction stories and accounts which got me wondering whether the FM addicts of NSC have ever had any such incidents?

Yes I got dumped by an ex-gf for playing FM for to long, i must of been around 17-18 we had been together about a year.

I used to play on it until roughly 4 in the morning and would need to be up for work at 8.

The first year I went to Glastonbury I planned to go to bed around 10 for a 5 o'clock leave, I ended up playing FM all night and didn't sleep for two days.

Luckily i grew out of it.

I did once quit my (crap) job over a Football Manager addiction!... Worked out well in the end, found a much better job after several seasons!

Might have to buy that. Worst it's done is make me sleep in for school numerous times/get to school and be pretty much asleep at my desk.

The reason it's so addictive (for those who haven't played it) is there is always that NEXT THING TO DO:

1. 10pm: Ah, I'll just make a few signings, improve the squad a bit.
2. 10:45pm: Well of course, I should go to sleep at some point soon, but I want to see how the new signings slot in.
3. 11:15pm: Started the season well, I'll just get to Christmas and then get some sleep.
4. 12:20am: I should really sleep, but I STILL haven't solved the left wing problem, and the January window is opening, let's see who I can get.
5. 12:50am: Yes! Got that obscure french LW who looks like he's going to be class, I'm 4th at the moment but only 7 points off top, could I close that gap?
6. 1.30am: Cup run, league coming to a close, gotta be up in 5 hours but got to see how this one pans out.
7. 3:10am: Right, now to retain the title! Who shall I buy with all of this money? Might call in sick, I've got to stick with this.

and so on, until you die of thirst.

Even if you do bail out at 12.20am on your timeline, you just find yourself lying there in bed thinking of left wingers who might be available, then firing it all back up at 1am with about 5 players you just want to check on.

Exactly. It is NOT a game that can be played casually, it's the sort of game that makes wish I could stop time.

This and This!!!! Such an addictive game.
Or when your in a run of games without a win and need to turn the result around - just one more game... And when you get that win, you have to see if you can go on a little run of form.
Love it

Exactly. There is ALWAYS a justification for another 10 minutes of play.

I get around my life by including football manager in it. I like nothing more than cleaning the house, listening to some tunes and playing fm12. I will admit that as the game has got more involved it has become harder to do!

I am currently wondering how far i can take Belgium while on my 5 or 6th season with the Albion.

I remember trying to sign John Sutton for weeks, cant remember what year it was, ended up spending my whole transfer budget on him, but he then went on to rape the league. no better feeling than getting your man!

On the flip side.

he did so well he had some big clubs sniffing around him, the bastard only went and handed in a transfer request, i was actually angry!

He ended up going to Bristol City and he was shit there. JUSTICE PIE.

Was he a St. Mirren player at the time?

I am still proud of signing a very young Argentinian striker who was plying his trade in Brazil. I regularly scout the u21s of the South American countries, but rarelys ecure the signing, as work permits never seem to come in for those players - certainly not for smaller clubs anyway. However, at teh time I'd progressed to managing Liverpool, and did indeed secure the services of a then unknown Carlos Tevez. #proud

I find that if you are on a good run, and then you save and switch off your team can sometimes go to shit when you turn it back on again.

Therefore the best plan is to keep going if you are on a good run.

Unfortunately this can lead to 12hr plus stints when things are going well.

02/03 was the one I was addicted by. I loaded it up last winter and played a network game with 2 mates for about 3 days. It was TOO FUN

Not with Football Manager but Counter Strike pretty much dominated my life between the ages of 15 and 18 before going to University.

I play football manager though, it's a good thing to have on when watching the telly and half paying attention. I find it too frustrating to be addictive though. My plan for the new one is to make Brighton a club with just english players and as many english internationals as possible a la Barcelona.

I love signing unknown players on FM, then within 2/3 years suddenly their on Sky Sports News and heading to the Premiership. A great feel of achievement.

I've just started playing it after splitting from the gf, im 14 seasons in, I have only English players in my 1st team squad to make it a challenge, I forgot how addictive it was!

I'm getting to that stage now. I'm 11 seasons in and made myself a real success by poaching overseas players on frees in Jan to sign at the end of the season. I ended up playing for two seasons without a British player! I did however, win the Prem 4 times in a row. I'm now in the process of revamping my entire squad with British players to test myself. Although, because of the random name generator I have five players in my squad, ALL called Tyrone Brown!

Love it.
