Like the advert says...........You either have an iphone............................................

....or you dont envisage being able to afford one.............so are we saying only an iphone will do the job?

Of course not (unless you ask some iPhone owners who will tell you it completes your life). There are plenty of cheap Android phones out there that will do the job, something like a Samsung Galaxy Ace.

I had an HTC Wildfire - not sure on the standalone price, but it was free on a £15 tariff two years ago. This ran MapMyRun just fine, which I always use for tracking my running via GPS.

Thanks Badger, I was looking at this one earlier http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/SAMSUNG-GALAXY-Y/HANDSET&clearance=false
and as far as this non teck guy could see it would cover all the bases if i wanted to track my fitness with a bike/walk app, but im not most confident at making these choices lol

I just looked up these phones and can get for about a ton, I see they have android 2.1 but that the mapmyrun app goes on that version so looks good

Do you have an iPod? If so have you considered the Nike shoe chip that works with it? Pretty accurate to be fair and used it before my Garmin watch! Garmin is an alternative to a phone and dependant on model will be cheaper! Also you can get away from the bloody mobile whilst you train!! Downloads everything to your PC as well!

Quite a few people at work use Strava (requires 2.1 upwards) - so might be worth checking that out. Just a case of checking out a few apps and review and see what fits your needs best. They all seem to do fairly similar things in terms of recording different routes and letting friends see them and challenge your times etc.

It does seem as though as long as the phone i get is android 2.1 or better that there are a fair few options available which is good. The two suggested phones look fine. I did look at Garmin and only decide against as i actually need a phone anyway so once i have one and got an app up and running, no pun there, i can look into that

bloody hell, thats cheap!!! have you bought from them before?

yeah, i've got one. it works great for a cheap phone, I paid £40 for it back then, its even cheaper now, had it 6 months and use it when abroad with work (which is very often) rather than my £400 HTC. delivery was about £6ish from memory.

they flog them for £75 on ebay, this site sells stuff direct from the factory at much cheaper prices

If not a Garmin, the best fitness App I have used for the iPhone is 'Runkeeper' and they do an android version! Really good, tracks your route via GPS, tracks your pace, plays your music and even sorts out a 'Power song' for those giving up moments!! I have tried loads over the years and you will be hard pushed to beat this one!!

You want to buy a smartphone just so you can use an app?

Why not look for free online solutions?
