Was told by someone I trust implicitly that works in housing the government has paid London's homeless the train fare to piss off to Brighton for the duration of the Olymics. Cannot find any press about this but like I say , I trust the person that told me. And to be fair I have started seeing a lot of new homeless faces around, especially on St James St. If true, is there anything this government won't sink to?

Normal practice at every Olympics in modern times, there were the same stories for Atlanta, Sydney and Athens..... China actually shipped them to a coastal town/camp and kept them locked up....

I didn't realise that. I presume they just pay to get shot but don't actually get them a hostel or anything for the duration?

I don't think it's the right way to spend taxpayers' money, the sort of thing socialists would do; but it's very kind of the government to give the homeless a couple of weeks at the seaside.

I can see the logic in it from a purely practical point of view. It woul dbe interesting to see how the homeless people feel about it. They may, as said, use it as a bit of a "holiday" but I can't imagine it does their self esteem much good, treated as unsightly trash that needs to be cleared out of the way. On top of that being cleared out of the way for something that costs that much money, money that could be spent working on some of their issues perhaps?

I've seen a lot more homeless people recently in Brighton, it's certainly increasing. But Brighton is a popular city, I read a report online and in the summer apparently they flock down because they can make £20 a day begging.

Agreed, the homeless population does grow in Summer. I think the last official number of homeless people in Brighton was 13! Yeah right. How can a city deal with a problem if they can't even admit to the extent of it in the first place?

I can't see this government spending any money on homeless people.

Very similar story working for homeless in Portsmouth, tony Blair days, where when the homeless figures were being counted they would go around in day and give them accomadation just for the night. :(

Yep, when I was out in China we were told that the homeless were shipped out of Beijing. Doesn't surprise me to be honest.

So, you're suggesting that the government are offering the homeless people a choice. There's a paid train fare if they want it? Do you think the other countries mentioned in this thread gave anyone a choice?

how does this work then?

I'm back in the country over summer and wouldn't mind my train fare to Brighton being paid. Do I just show up and look a bit scruffy?

Went to Bournemouth recently and noticed plenty of tramps there too
Although Bournemouth's tramp population is probably not linked to the Olympics

Surely it's not a new governmental policy to get shot of the unwanted.......................... the trick is to shoot them somewhere quiet because once the "news" hits the internet it becomes impossible to control it. Unfortunately the government's newly commissioned internet search device which is based on the technology developed in the hadron collider should have been ready for use before the Olympics but has been delayed by cut backs and inefficiencies in the civil service. The Super Hadron Information Trawl (S.H.I.T.) will identify anti government propoganda and automatically burn the hard drive of computers on which it is held while identifying the originators so that troops can be sent to deal with them once they have finished their primary task in defence of the realm - conducting intimate frisk searches at the Olympic park.

1984 is nearly here folks............. a bit delayed but after all this IS a government project

So the Government have given homeless people money to spend on a train fare?? Why on earth would the average homeless person spend that money on a train ticket when they could buy booze or drugs with it??

Even if they gave them the tickets, i'd venture that they'd be more likely to try to sell them than to actually use them.

13! Agreed, that has to be a joke. There was an article on The Argus site a week ago where they found a homeless family of a mum and three kids who were living in a 2 man tent on the beach. Luckily they were taken in by the council, shame about the others though.

Edit: Also, I was waiting for the train to work in the morning and saw a male and female homeless couple get off, neither had any shoes and they looked a state.
