Losing 4 - 0 at home the fans halted game and made players take there shirts off stating they were not fit to wear shirt.

When things restarted, the mighty Robur finally won 4-1. An excellent result that almost certainly guarantees Serie A survival for Siena. In fact, they have currently climbed into the top half of the table - although it's very tight in the middle. The Genoa Football and Cricket Club (to give them their proper name) are now just one place and one point above the relegation zone.

Unsavoury scenes erupted at the Marassi after the hosts went down 4-0 to the Bianconeri with just 53 minutes on the clock, as ultras forced the team to remove their shirts

Genoa players stripped off their shirts in a gesture of apology to angry, flare-throwing fans on Sunday as their protests forced a 45-minute suspension of the team’s 4-1 loss to Siena in Serie A.

Genoa is in danger of being relegated and the gesture was an apparent way for the players to acknowledge they were not worthy of wearing the club’s shirt.

The unusual scenes came as protests broke out among Genoa supporters early in the second half as their team trailed 4-0.

Fans threw flares onto the pitch and climbed atop barriers as they were faced by stewards in riot gear at the Luigi Ferraris stadium, forcing families with small children to flee.

Also, Genoa forward Bosko Jankovic was forced to leave his seat on the bench after an argument with fans.

Genoa captain Marco Rossi spoke with the fans at one point and then removed his shirt before gathering some of his teammates’ shirts in an attempt to appease the supporters.

That seemed to work as the fans eventually calmed down — while Siena and the referee went into the changing room — and the match resumed in the 54th minute without incident.

“This violence is unacceptable,” Italian football federation president Giancarlo Abete said. “These are not fans. I hope these people are found and condemned. They shouldn’t ever be allowed to enter stadiums again.”

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi was similarly critical of the fans’ behaviour.

“It’s upsetting that 60 or 100 people have the impunity to do and say what they feel like without being stopped and sent home,” Preziosi said. “It’s not possible that they take over the stadium and impose their laws.”

Franco Brienza had scored twice for Siena, and Mattia Destro and Luigi Giorgi also found the net before the suspension.

Cristiano Del Grosso scored an own goal for Genoa in the 79th.

Genoa has the worst defence in the league and is fighting to avoid relegation.

The scene was reminiscent of the Italy-Serbia match at the same stadium in October 2010, which was stopped by violent clashes between Serbia supporters and police.

“There are laws and they need to be applied,” Abete said. “We already paid the price in Genoa with the national team.”

The protests came just a week after all Italian matches were cancelled following the death of Piermario Morosini in a Serie B game due to cardiac arrest.

I had a small doubles and trebles bet on draws, involving this game. I'm thoroughly delighted someone is finally standing up for the idiots who bet on teams like Genoa without knowing a damn thing about them. I'm glad their fans demanded they remove their shirts as well, maybe it will finally take all the emphasis away from Brighton, and now every time they play a game, they'll have to put up with the gay jibes. And rightly so.

On the plus side, the other Italian games were draws today. What a suprise, cheers boys, quids in!

Well that'll be a 100 euro's fine and 10 minutes on the naughty step, from UEFA.

I sneezed on the 37 minute mark, I believe we are looking at a 66 point deduction.

Sorry chaps

This is the typical UEFA fine for racism. Asking a player to take his top off will be around the 30,000 mark I reckon.

With Lecce now 1 point behind them after being so many adrift I can see why Genoa fans are angry. Looking at the form table my money is on Lecce to leapfrog them and send Genoa down.

What do you mean? UEFA have a history of fining continental clubs peanuts for racism and big bucks for lesser issues like administrative errors.

UEFA have a history of screwing our fans to the floor, while the Italians, Greek, et al can do whatever they want, pretty much unpunished.

Some of these Italian Ultras are f***ing lunatics. They beat up their own 'real' fans if they chant their team's name or encourage them if they're losing. Crazy.

Maybe, but I specifically contrasted UEFA fines for racism against lesser issues. Has England been fined a paltry sum for one and not the other?

The point I was rather glibly making was, if you put any of that into say today's Utd v Everton report.
Because of the outrage, the FA would act, closely followed by UEFA.
Whereas this and countless other acts in Italy, such as storming training ground, at least 3 football related deaths in 5 years, 'everyday' violence, goes unpunished in footballing terms, from the governing body.
