New carpets stolen in Bewbush house break-in

Burglars have broken into a house in West Sussex and made off with several newly-laid carpets.

The terraced property in Staplecross Court in Bewbush was unoccupied and being prepared for new tenants, Sussex Police said.

The thieves stole three bedroom carpets and a lounge carpet between 20:00 BST on Saturday and 20:00 on Monday.

Police said a large vehicle would have been used and it would have been obvious to anyone who saw it.

The surprise of course being not that the carpet has been stolen, but that any house in Bewbush has carpet.

When I lived in Crawley, police once raided one of the baggage handlers houses and found the place carpeted from top to bottom in bright red with a tasteful 'Virgin Atlantic' motif running through it.

I remember an engineers house getting raided many years ago. The difference being, the carpet was a shade of blue with The BA emblem & logo "To Fly To Serve" adorned over it.

Prior to the enhanced security monitoring of modern times, There's little that hasn't gone for a walk from Gatwick down the years. An Engine from a Dan-Air 1-11, a tractor plus the Cathy Pacific Supervisors car are just some of the items that have been half inched by 'persons unknown'.

I can't believe it took them two days to steal a few carpets though..... and exactly two days to the minute.

Don't think for a second that it doesn't still go on in alarming numbers. Put it this way: I would advise each and every one of you to make sure you never, ever accidentally leave your phone, iPod, wallet or any other valuable possessions in the seat-back pocket when you disembark a flight. Your chances of seeing them again once you've left the plane are, shall we say, depressingly slim.

The thief is thought to be Mexican as he was heard shouting "Underlay Underlay Arriba Arriba" as he made his getaway.
