You can get fannied in petanque can't you?

Indeed you can -

"To beat one's opponents 13 to 0. The figure of a bare-bottomed lass named Fanny is ubiquitous in Provence wherever pétanque is played. It is traditional that when a player loses 13 to 0 it is said that “il est fanny” (he's fanny) or “il a fait fanny” (he made fanny), and that he has to kiss the bottom of a girl called Fanny. Since there is rarely an obliging Fanny's behind handy, there is usually a substitute picture, woodcarving or pottery so that Fanny’s bottom is available. More often, the team which made "fanny" has to offer a beverage to the winning team (see the French popular expression "Fanny paie à boire !").

Funny what you can remember after all these years, or did I look it up on Wikipedia??

having lived in france for around 4 years,i've played this quite abit,f***ing useless mind

couldn't beat an average local, which is frustrating,as i'm usually quite respectable at most sports

from what i gather,it's just an excuse to get away from the misses and get pissed, which suits me down to the ground

:drink:

Tom Hark, Preston Park - I am definitely up for a game or three!

I am due to have an operation on Wednesday (Cochlear Implant) and that means I am not to undertake anything strenuous for 4 weeks or so.

Just finished a stint working in Preston Park and have been enjoying me boules! An excellent game.

Do you have your own set? Being a little skint, you will have to supply the wine and cheese.

Barrel of fun should be able to tell you more but im sure the petanque court in preston park is free, although i do believe they charge a deposit of around a score for the "boules". It's very popular too i believe.

Haha! Yes, 'tis free. Although a £20 deposit is needed. Relatively popular, although it took a while to pick up as there were no signs in place for a fair while.

Not sure what the plans are for boules over the autumn/winter as there are no attendants to loan out the sets and they lay gathering dust in the Ladies Pavilion.

An REMF competition? Fancy a game, jevs?

Its free we've had a note through the door asking us to join a Sunday afternoon 'league' I wrote on the back that as long as the tweezers can still just about cope with my nasel hair or that I have a cocktail stick and an accessible hemeriod, I doubt I'll have the time. I handed it back to my neighbour who opened the door at 5:30pm eating a bowl or porridge!!

Though I expect it might be a laugh with a few mates after a few beers. But how long before the shot putt competition starts?

Good luck with the operation mate. Send us a PM when you fancy a game. As I'm, eh, resting, between contracts, I can do most days. I've got a set of eight well-worn boules (4 pairs of different markings) and I dare say I can rustle up a couple of bottles of wine from the local offie's extensive 'Two for £7.99' range

I sometimes see a load of guys playing Petanque when i'm jogging in Parc Luxembourg. Their accuracy is scary. I played the game once in Nancy. Definite room for improvement.

In my bungalow
My wife and i were in Normandy in 2003 and we were watching the locals playing it on a lovely summer evening in this little village. My wife who speaks French started chatting to them and they invited me to play. I played one of the best players in the village and beat him.
I had played the odd game with some frenchies in the past so i knew how to play.
This poor sod was so embarrassed to get beat by a Rose Beef.

Great game

Love playing it - and watching it in France. came across it on the television in France last year as well - think it was the national championships. They had specialists at all kinds of shots, including the "knocking the opponent's ball out of the way" guy. Great skill and accuracy.

I have spoken to many French people who don't understand our own Bowls - think it's far too easy. They don't normally realise that the ball is weighted. Having been brought up in Worthing, I know about these things.
