Jason Roberts now having a medical at Reading before signing. Fantastic deal for them.

Meanwhile...................................

Jocular article in the Argus about Michael Owen who seems to have been the subject of whatever transfer questions were asked at this morning's press conference.

Is Gus still confident? Who knows? Certainly not anyone who relies on the local press for news........thank heaven for the Scottish press who have been considerably more forthcoming this morning (re: Murray Wallace). Although this "news" was in the public domain it seems no questions were asked about that either this morning.

edit: my sincere apologies to our intrepid newshound HB&B who in his article about Buckley not doing headstands or whatever should he score (we are all interested in that aren't we?) does slip-in the following bit of news which might be of real interest.............................."On the injury front we were told that Craig Noone, Kazenga Lua Lua and Vicente all have a chance of being involved against Newcastle, and that he may even bring in a new player in time to play against the Geordies, but negotiations could drag on until the 31st January and he had some players almost ‘on stand-by’ if something was to fall through."

Thank you HB&B.

So who will it be?

We clearly needed the money from selling Hoskins (if he agrees terms) to bring in our new strike partner for CMS..................... back to Sam Vokes as favourite for me as McCarthy has suggested that rather than loan him out yet again, he wants to sell him in this window. If it is Vokes (and we won't know presumably who it is until Hoskins agrees to go) will people view him differently now he has "cost" us Hosky.

And if Cardiff now come back in for Nooney as reports (yes, even naylor!) suggest they will, do we need to and are we going to sell him too?

If that happened I think any new striker might struggle to get the fans behind him, almost regardless of who he was.

Just come across this :Wolves swoop for Bournemouth striker Sam Vokes for £250,000 | Mail Online

Not sure what exactly Wolves would be after for him, but I don't think it'd be far off that figure. He's not done a lot since joining really, and presumably it's another body off the wage bill for Mick Mccarthy. I wouldn't be at all suprised if we had enough in the bank to afford Vokes (permanently or on loan) without selling Hoskins, and that this money is being used to bring in Jara Reyes, who would seemingly feature more often than Hoskins, and in a position we are very short for cover.

I'm wondering whether Nicky Maynard has got cold feet over a move to Wigan. Lets be honest, that's a crap move for him if they get relegated when there are quite a few Championship clubs playing to near sold-out modern stadiums...

Thank you HB&B.

That means if he brings in someone ready to play in the FA Cup, they can't have played in previous rounds as they'll be cuptied.......so they were either injured(!!!), left out, or are foreign?

Yes but did Gus actually say, "ready to play against the Geordies" or "will have arrived before the Newcastle match"? With Crayons reporting no one can really be sure

Burnley weren't allowed to play Vokes in the third round ???

I'd laugh ow if it was someone else who has never had a mention.............. and there is STILL no hint of who a midfielder might be (unless Gus has settled on Reyes to help the defence now that we have "discovered" JFC

I think Vokes is for sale now rather than loan

Didnt the Argus say something about Newcastles Tavernier as a target recently or was it a rumour I noticed here?

Pardew I think mentioned he would probably send him out on loan to a Championship club and may well have dropped out that we were interested. Tavernier will definitely not be available to buy

Two tweets in the last hour professing to have seen Vokes at Oakwell today.
Barnsley rather than Brighton? Certainly rumours lately that Davies is not cutting the mustard after his early season flourish and rumours that Vaz Te may not be happy.
Hope not true as I think he would slot in well alngside CMS

Still on the striker trail...........................

Tyrone Barnett looks to be heading from Crawley to Ipswich for £800K

West Ham back in for Rhodes from Huddersfield - offered £3.25m - if Hudds take note of the £7m Hammers offered Rangers for Jelavic the fee will need to be much higher than that!

on the midfield hunt................

tweeted 2 minutes ago "Algerian international midfielder Adlene Guedioura has been made available for loan by Wolves. No clubs mentioned" Could do a job?
