I loved growing up in Brighton.

I remember the wooden paper shack in London Rd (mentioned by the op). In those days, London Road was a proper shopping area with the Co-Op as the flagship. The open market was a bustling thriving centre of commerce.

A treat would be a meal at the Solarium in Churchill Square. Filby's had a toy and bike shop in Lewes Road where my mum would get our toys. We were on first name terms with all the local shops there - a real community spirit.

I remember queuing for the school bus outside the Vogue cinema (now they gyratory system), the bag lady, "10p mate" the bearded tramp who would ask all passers by for this handsome sum. I remember taking empty Corona lemonade bottles from outside the back of the Labour Club in Lewes Road into the newsagent for a 10p refund.

The old Sally Army hall in Park Crescent, the old Churchill Square with the ice cream kiosk, the old pier with creaky boards, the level before the hurricane, Viaduct Road being 2 way before they f*cked up the traffic system, The Gloucester complete with sticky carpet for a top night out, Rayfords on Sydney Street for Electricals, Potters menswear in London Road, The old Argus building when it was in use (worked there), the old Jubilee Car Park, the toilets at the clock tower (now paved over), Hanningtons, Vokins, Cafe De Paris St James St (dancing on tables), ABC Cinema, British Leyland garage (Scotts) at bottom of elm grove with petrol pumps, Uncle Sams top of West Street, BP garage opposite the pier, late night kebab shop in Preston Street, the Pink Coconut ....... I am getting old!!

One Brighton institution remains however from that time and hasn't really changed a bit......

In the 50s when there were 32 cinemas in Brighton and Hove,Churchill Square was just a glimmer in the architects eye, Brighton Tigers reigning supreme in the ice hockey world playing at the SS at the bottom of West Street,Preston Barracks full of the Army,Gasometers everywhere, the sounds and smells of the trains at Brighton station, old fashioned shops with their wares hanging outside, fashions like men with baggy trousers with turn-ups and nearly always a hat, cheesecutters or trilbys, trams and trolly buses, the Brewery and it's horse drawn delivery wagons...into the sixties, policemen in white helmets..the mods and rockers...the great Albion team of Bobby and Jack Smith,Goodchild,Wilkinson....ah! memories..........

Skateboard Culture: AA Baker, Max's and Alpine Sports - Red Kryptonics were perfect for the 'fuzzy' pavement on the hills of Hollingdean West Pier slope for slalom; Churchill Square and Mark Baker (unofficial 'top boy' of the skaters and for some deluded reason I thought the Boney M song of the time 'Ma Baker' was about him)

Cinema culture: Vogue at bottom of Hollingdean Road - it had striptease on Friday eve's and kids cinema Saturday mornings!! Booting Fire Exit doors open and sneaking in at the following places - Duke of Yorks, ABC, Cinescene (generally thrown out within 5 mins - but only did it for the buzz of getting in free)

Music Culture - the many second hand record shops in North Laine area - a few had seperate areas offering mags of an adult nature which always distracted me. Woolworths use to have a sizeable shop floor area given over to the Top 40 singles and album chart. First records bought were Jilted John - Gordon is a Moron and Sham 69 - If the Kids are United. First gig - Madness at the Brighton Centre. When it started, most of the harder 'Skins' in the seats started hanging over edge and jumping into standing area. Pookiesnackenburger busking outside Tesco (where Komedia is now) always ending with the 'Just one Cornetto' song

Albion Culture - Getting glimpse of ground as you passed church on South East corner. Folks standing in gardens of houses behind chicken run. Mullery's Marvels scarf tied around wrist. Catching the No. 59 bus home to Hollingdean and without fail some geezer inside would have a wireless and pass on scores of other matches and reception would always cut out as we went through tunnel down New England Road which resulted in groans from other passengers. My mate grabbing a discarded cigar from Mullery from touchline - he still has it in an Old Holborn tin.

Four figure log tables instead of calculators (you needed O-level standard maths to operate the calculation alone).
Schoolmasters deadly accurate in thrwoing board dusters and chalk at you.
Divalls cafe outside Brighton Station - huge sandwiches, very cheap
Sainsburys on London Road -where you had to queue at each different counter to be served - cheese (cut with cheesewire) cold meats, bisciuts, provisions, etc.
Burton's shop doorway opposite Clock Tower - meeting place for your new 'date'.
Rayford Electrics, Sydney Street - already mentioned. (My dad worked for Rayfords and following companies for over 20 years)
