So, if a more complete explanation is available and readable in minutes, why wade through 3 hours of it ?
There are plenty taking that view it seems. Personally, I'm just enjoying the adaptation for what it is. But if you want the complete story, this is obviously not the one to watch.

I rather enjoyed it myself, shall be tuning in again tonight.

Compared to that shit with David Jason the other night, it was BAFTA worthy.

Thought it picked up a little last night after a rather weak start.

Bit with the couple in the pond was a bit cringeworthy though.

For me, the bombshell that the convict is the benefactor hasn't had the impact I think it is meant to have. I'm not sure an epic like GE really works in this format.

Its always difficult to get the characterisation across that Dickens writes in an abridged mini series. For example, when Estella first appears in the book, the writing is superb and one of the few elements of O Level english lit that still sticks in my mind today. The play on words about Estella being star like is true classic 'poetry'.

I was listening to something on Radio 4 at the weekend saying that Dickens only wrote two dimensional non developed characters. Cant say I agree with that - Macawber for example was a fanatstic exploration into what we would now know as Bipolar disorder. His social commentary is also first class. Again that style of writing needs a good 6 hour series to really develop.

However that being said, as a piece of drama I still think this production has been a welcome treat.

I saw and loved the first episode. I didn't quite jump out of my seat in the way that the David Lean Magwitch reveal always gets me to - there's a good poll to be done about "film moments that always make you jump even though you know they're coming" - but it's a really high quality effort all round.

My Father-in-law loves DJ and insisted on watching that. By CHRIST it was shocking. Literally UNBELIEVABLY bad. What were they thinking?

It was so shit it had a thread all of its own the other day. Possibly two. People were gobsmacked at seeing David Jason in something so bad.

I shall have a look at that, cheers.

Anyway - shallow that I am, Great Expectations for me is still all about the 1998 modernisation, with the achingly beautiful and pleasingly naked, Gwyneth Paltrow.
