Off to Chicago on Thursday - We've not been before, and whilst I've done plenty of research, I thought I'd ask you all if there are any 'Don't miss' sights etc.(Specifically re Blues Clubs)

Going to St.Louis, Milwaukee and Green Bay too on the same trip, so again, any sugestions would be great.

Thank you.

I haven't got any suggestions, just wanted to say, I've always wanted to go to that part of the world so let us know what it's like.

And have fun.

Exactly what I was going to say. My sister/brother in law thought Chicago was as good as New York.

Was in Chicago, I would recommend the bean ( a cool sculpture), the willis tower, go up and check the perspex boxes you can walk out on at a stupid height.. Magnificent Mile (tons of shops, Marilyn Monroe statue, Big Nike store), Planetarium (the films were pretty cool, 3D was shite), Aquarium and Pier.. That should start you off..

Chicago is a superb city to visit, one of the top 3 or 4 in the USA - the centre is very walkable, and for more distant locations, there's the El (elevated railway). But it can be seriously cold at this time of year, so check the weather forecast.

Sadly you won't be there in the baseball season, so you'll miss out on Wrigley Field, but walk down CIark Street from there and there are plenty of great bars, including Sluggers, which has batting cages on the first floor. Keep going down towards Belmont station on the El and there are some good clothes and music shops. Wicker Park, near the Damon stop on the blue line, is also a good area.

I recommend the Billy Goat Tavern (if you can find it, down some steps off Michigan Avenue) and Dick's Last Resort - a restaurant right on the river, with good food and fantastically rude waiters. If you're a film buff, go to Union Station and see the stairs that the pram rolled down in The Untouchables.

The Magnificent Mile is okay but expensive. Navy Pier - ho hum in my opinion.

If you're going to St Louis then you can go up inside the Gateway Arch which is quite cool. The old station which is now a hotel is a great place to stay.

I love Chicago.
Don't forget to take a trip up the Sears Tower (or whatever it's called now). The views over the city are amazing.
And if you like a good steak, you'll be spoilt for choice.

But don't forget it can get mighty bloody cold there in winter with the wind chill coming off the lake. It's an amazing setting there, though. Looks like it's a city on the coast because the lake is so massive.

Thanks for your suggestions.

We realise it will be COLD - although at the moment it's about 1 degree in Chicago and minus 3 in Green Bay, so not too bad!

Willis Tower as it's now called is open on Christmas Day - so we're planning to go up it then, before watching the Packers v Bears game in a Bar.

NAN - thanks for your tip re Wrigley Field - I know there won't be any games, but still planning to have a wander round the area, and see an iconic Stadium. Planning to get the travel pass so lots of use of the EL.

I lived in Chicago for a year. Great city, but not in the winter. Coldest place on earth when the wind blows off the lake.

Also lived in St Louis for a year. OK city at best. Nothing much worth seeing except the arch and riverfront, but again you're going at the worst time. It's horrible in the winter.

Milwaukee is OK. Not a whole lot to see.

Sorry to be so negative.

Get yourself to an NFL game if you can possibly get a ticket. St. Louis is probably your best shot, but Soldier Field (Chicago) and Lambeau (Green Bay) are iconic.

Not too worried about the cold - we're well prepared. If you lived there for a year you must have some idea re Blues Clubs?

Going to St.Louis to see the Arch, and see the new Cardinals Stadium - even though there are no games you can still do the Stadium Tour. Also fancy doingthe Busch Brewery Tour.

Milwaukee is a stop off on the way to Green Bay - lots of Micro Breweries there I understand as well as their famous Friday Fish Fries.

Green Bay - Packers game - nothing else!!

Cracking bit of classic NSC advise.
Go up the 630 feet (192 m) Gateway Arch, it being the tallest man-made monument in the United States, it towers over the entire city, and is impossible to miss. (although it is surprisingly narrow at the top)

Very jealous - love Chicago! The weather there looks ok at the moment too - you may get lucky as it can get blooming freezing with the wind chill!

The Shedd Acquarium in Chicago is the bestest Acquarium ever!

I used this web site for up and coming Blues gigs too!
