How much do you spend on Christmas dinner?

According to this article, the average price of a dinner for 6 is £75. That sounds awfully steep to me - I reckon my Christmas dinner for 5 is going to cost about £30 (and that includes wine).

I reckon that most people are not going to spend much more than that (£40 to £45 maybe), so for the average to be £75, there'll be a few people spunking £200 and more on their scran - how the hell can you do that?

I would agree that ours for 4 people including wine but not sure about the port or brandy after will be about £30. add the Port and Brandy in and the price doubles.

I can't find the link to the research, but yes, if it includes spirits, then it's easy to push it up closer to £75. I'd like to know exactly what's being measured - poor work by the BBC not to include the link

It will if you have reasonable Brandy something like Remy VSOP and a Vintage Character or Vintage Port. If you have Tesco own it will put it up by about £15-£20

About £30, no port/brandy involved (port is a Christmas Eve thing for me and brandy is just unpleasant).

The goose will cost around £60 and Champagne plus superier wine approximately another £50,after all it is Christmas and will have been budgeted for.

This is for 10 people and I expect the leftovers and salad to do boxing day and beyond, however, treble this when Wine is factored in!

Probably about £100 for the four of us, including wine and crackers. Apart from rearing the turkey and growing the vegetables my wife insists on making everything herself (even the mincemeat in the mince pies) as opposed to just buying it all cheaply from ASDA. That all really bumps the cost up. And that's not including the cost of the fuel to cook it all; when it was first made the pudding had to be steamed for something like six hours.

We're cooking for 8 people this Christmas. The two local butchers were quoting £55+ for a 5kg bird (which is too big, IMO). In the end, I think I'm going to order from a butchers in Hurstpierpoint where the turkey comes from a local farm, is actually a bit bigger and is about £10 less.

Anyway given that, I fail to see what is so unremarkable about the cost of the food being £75 on average. I reckon mine is going to cost a lot more than that, especially if you include alchohol.

I eat out, and it's £70 a head at The Connaught Pub and Kitchen in Hove. All things considered I think this is a fair price. This will be my third year at this place.

Buying a KFC bargain bucket xmas eve should last over Christmas.

The butchers are still expensive in Reigate then,Simster.

Interesting question.

With veggies in the house we don't need much turkey, but even a small one from our local butcher is coming in at £25, I think. With a start like that, once wine and crackers are included, I can't believe we'll be too far away from £75, probably on the higher side.

Probably be in the £80-100 region for five people. Turkey is the biggest expense, but I really enjoy it and it won't all be eaten in one go. People who moan about eating Turkey at Christmas tend to go in cheap and or just buy breast meat off the bone and then wonder why it is dry and tasteless.
