Obviously Christmas is the daddy (although at least it seems to have some meaning) but outside of that which is your most pointless commercial day?

Halloween - I have absolutely no idea what the point of it is and I don't recall it being such a big event when I was a kid (possibly because it combines dressing up and knocking on stranger's doors, two things I wouldn't willingly choose to do).

Valentines - Force people to spend a fortune and make one particular day the time when you have to show your love to someone. The other 364 days are of course insignificant in a relationship.

Valentines without a doubt. Let's charge people more for things they can do on any other day of the year. Why do you need a designated day to show your affection for someone? Never really understood it.

halloween is the most pointless, valentines is the most annoying because it actually affects me

I thought this was some sort of commemorative event. Much as I loathe it I draw the line at dressing up as one of the couple from the irritating BT ad just to demonstrate my hatred of them.

Technically both are supposed to be commemorative events but I doubt you'll find many trick-or-treaters that could tell you the origin of halloween.

Funnily enough I just walked past a guy with blue painted face and arms, I'm assuming he was going for Incredible Hulk but the shop was out of green paint.

At least Hallowe'en and Valentine's Day have some sort of presence. Sadly, most pointless would have to be St George's Day - a half-arsed affair if ever there was one.

Only properly celebrated by tedious mongy EDL types, who go into full on cringe mode every single St Paddies day because St George's day isn't celebrated in "OUR" country.

Normal people recognise that proper countries like England, France, USA, Germany etc don't need a special day to celebrate it. We're well above that nonsense. Leave it to the tin pot Celtic nations and the army of plastics found in big cities in proper countries who left their native nations to find work about 3 decades ago and have never bothered going back except on holiday (to tell their family how great it is in England/USA or wherever  ).

It's called 'national identity'. You should try it.

Just wait until you get Administrative Professional’s Day in the UK. Every April we get subtle hints from the secretaries about all the chocolates and flowers they expect for just doing their jobs. Another big American scam.

I would consider Independence Day as the American equivalent.

St George's Day is quite amusing though, to quote Wikipedia:

"Countries that celebrate St George's Day include England, Canada, Croatia, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Republic of Macedonia"

Hardly an English day.

No need. I'm comfortable understanding what being English is all about, without resorting to some pointless brewery-sponsored day and feeling the urge to pratt about wearing a ginger wig or a silly leprechaun hat and using the word "craic" or "dram" in every other sentence.

Is that just an extension of the ludicrous tipping culture they have over there?

I was on holiday in California in the early Nineties and was solemnly reminded that the forthcoming 'Columbus Day' wasn't to be called that anymore. It had to be called 'Indigenous People's Day'. Bless!

Pretty much. Just a way to get the punter to subsidize low paid staff so the employer dosen't have to pay a living wage

Nothing is as important as Christmas.
Christmas is the day god sent us Jesus in celebration of his love for Capitalism and M&S Christmas adverts as early as september.

Halloween seems a little pointless to me... its making childeren dress up to beg.
Then again, I loved it as a child.
Maybe I'm just boring.

Good gormless harmless fun though, eh? Who amongst us hasn't at some point in their lives felt the marketing-instilled urge to don the silly leprechaun hat and drink their annual few pints of Guinness in something approximating to an Oirish pub (or at least one serving a free Jamiesons with every pint of the black stuff). Bejaysus!

Compare and contrast with the nasty low IQ right wing meatheads that feel the urge to march through the town centre on St George's Day.

Just back from a Halloween party - a number of the yummy mummies were vamped up in tight black bustiers, fishnets and high heels.

You wouldn't get that with Valentine's.
