Has there ever been a truly lean music period?

Of course it is. I have four albums on HovaGirl's list and I wouldn't listen to most of the rest if they were offered me for nothing, but that's me.

I can only answer the question that was originally posed and I think the early to mid-70s were terrible for music but there'll be people who love it just as there'll be people who love music from the other eras that have been mentioned.

Out of interest, which ones do you have from my list, and which ones wouldn't you give the time of day to?

Ultimately I suppose its subjective. Periods may seem lean to you personally but to somebody else it could be absolutely brilliant, its all dependant on taste.

One's age at a particular time has quite a lot to do with it,I reckon.Well it does for me anyway............my favourite time will always be 1967,1968 1969, and probably my least favourite the 90's!

Probably something to do with why I hate everything at the moment.

That you hate everything at the moment possibly has nothing to do with your age but with the fact (my opinion, of course) that it's all crap!

It depends I always equate good periods when what was underground hits mainstream and the charts become exciting, for that 1980-83 and 1989-91 to me were really good, there certainly was a trough around 1985-87 and another around the 2000-02 mark which presaged the end of commercial dance music. Even in the troughs there is good stuff out there but it becomes harder to find.

I think everything since about 2002 has been pretty poor. Obviously there has been the odd good track but I certainly think it's been the worst era since the early 70's.

I actually have three: Ziggy Stardust and the first two Roxy Music albums (I thought I had Harvest but I was thinking of After the Goldrush).

There are plenty I wouldn't listen to but the one that, to me, represents the everything that was wrong with the era is the Rick Wakeman Six Wives - I remember listening to a mate's copy and couldn't believe that people liked it. But, it's all subjective and if that's your bag, good on you.

Maybe if you limit yourself to chart music, then perhaps there will be lean periods. Same if you limit yourself to any genre I suppose. Anyone who can't find much that they like in music in any point in time is perhaps tired of London ?, and we know where that leads to.

There was a thread about this a few months ago (I know cos I started it) about how the music scene between 1972 and 1976 was pretty dreadful. There were a few dissenters, including Buzzer, but I stand by my opinion. It covers the period from when I was 15 to 20 (ie the time most people really get into music) and I struggle to think of too many decent albums.
