Has there ever been a truly lean music period?

I tend to avoid 80s compilation albums - especially some of the dross that the US was pushing out then. I've only to hear the opening bars to 'Maniac' and I have a little Bruce Banner moment.

There's no need to be sarky - I wasn't saying it's not an interesting question. I was just saying that I answered this quite recently but it would be interesting to hear views of other periods.

Might also argue that when Oasis were big by rehashing the Beatles it had to be a pretty lean period.

In my opinion, no there hasn't. I think the worst period of pop music was the mid-70s with prog rock disappearing up its arse, glam rock melding into a 60s tribute pantomime and awful country ballads dominating the charts but bubbling underneath was a fantastic music scene. Punk rock, Northern Soul, disco, pub rock/funk and reggae were all emerging at that time.

I think after music goes mainstream it does eventually run out of steam and start becoming a parody of itself but there's always something new coming up. It's what us British do best, you know. We don't have a stagnant type of music that defines our nation and culture. We constantly redefine ourselves.

The scene of today is a bit shit, to be honest. It's all wannabe rockers and wannabe punks.

I don't I just can't understand why so many millions of people pay money for that crap and how those artists can just carry on churning out the same songs rehashed and make a fortune and get all the publicity.

No there hasn't. If you have a fairly narrow taste of music there might have been a barren spell for you at some point, but there has always been fresh music coming through.

Late 80s, early 90s? No way! That was when the rave scene really took off, grunge was born and hip hop was strong.
