All round the fields of Falmer Road
Where we watch the King Smithy play (and can he play!)
Kazenga on the wing
We have dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Falmer Road

As said on the other thread, it's too similar to Liverpool's version. To use it for Fields of Falmer Road is just too much off a rip-off.

But we should use the tune for a song about a specific player, as it sounds fantastic when the Kop sing it.

You do realise the original song is a Irish republican anthem containing the words up the ira! Liverpool adapted due to their large Irish following. Not sure its right for the albion

Bloody Nora-with the struggles we're having getting SBTS sung properly can you imagine how long it's going to take to learn that?

Yes, the original song is an Irish republican anthem - but there's no mention of the IRA in it. It's Athenry, not IRA.

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Micheal they are taking you away
For you stole Trevelyn's corn
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matter Mary when your free,
Against the Famine and the Crown
I rebelled they ran me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity.

Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

By a lonely harbor wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

In other words, the words IRA aren't in the "original" lyrics

So what? The song is famously sung by Celtic & we all know a large section of their support have offensive views & sing that song (& some alot worse) to show those views. As such it (or anthing based upon it) has no place at an any ground in England in my opinion.

Scunny away the other year, on that cross between a train and tram between Donnie and Scunthorpe, admittedly after a few beers, I managed to link into the Fields of Athenry none other than... Johnny Matthis' "When a child is born" !

The link occurs at the end of the second line of the chorus after..."the small free birds fly." You then link in "De dah dah de dah, de dah de de dah, it comes to pass, when a child is born"!!

Try it, you will never think of Fields of Athenry in the same light again, as confirmed by one of Albion's finest who has definite Irish republican sympathies!
