Let's face it !

No matter, as PM / Government of whatever persuasion, you just cannot run the country without having the media on board

I think that's true to an extent but bear in mind that we have a fairly defined press in this country, in terms of political leanings. The Telegraph and Daily Mail have ALWAYS been right leaning papers whilst the Guardian has always been left leaning. The Sun tended to back whoever suited Murdoch's interests best. If we now see the decline of News International papers in this country then we'll be left with papers unlikely to shift their allegiances.

In this situation we're not going to have claims of "it's the Sun wot won it" and we can go back to deciding who we want to vote for based on policies

The media, especially the papers have tried to control the country for too long. Stick to reporting the news. It's been a case of the tail wagging the dog for too long. All this can only be a good thing in the end.

Agreed and I hate to admit by Steve Coogan has said it right when he spoke about them hiding behind their practices as what they reported was "in the public interest"...i hope they return to reporting the news and not creating it, not influencing the people who buy their papers....

I can't disagree with that and the interesting point, from that, is that people will be prepared to make up their own minds on political issues rather than listening to the editorial position of whatever newspaper, left or right, and whatever way the wind happens to be blowing.

Supporters' Groups Support Existing Albion Shareholding Structure

Following the statement from Albion chairman Dick Knight at the meeting of supporters at The Island, Hove, on Monday, 22nd March, all of the supporters' groups detailed at the bottom of this release are issuing the following agreed joint statement. This covers all supporter groups representing fans.

"We would like to emphasise our support for the position that the Directors of Brighton and Hove Albion have adopted over Stephen Purdew's bid to have a
controlling interest in the club, in return for an investment.

"All supporters' groups believe that no one person should have control of OUR club, in line with the FA-brokered shareholding agreement.

"The pitfalls of having one person in sole command are well documented. After all, supporters struggled long and hard to remove Bill Archer as a controlling
shareholder following the sale of the Goldstone Ground. The present shareholding agreement, with its reference to the non-executive directors, protects the interests of the club and therefore its fans.

"Since the current directors took over, supporters have been given unparalleled levels of openness and consultation in the running of the club. Both sides have
worked hard to develop an excellent relationship with Brighton and Hove Council, and we do not wish to see anything happen which could jeopardise this. Indeed, it is a measure of the progress the club and its supporters have made that the Albion is now considered an investment opportunity.

"To become a minority shareholder, Mr Purdew would need to prove to both the fans and the board that he is committed to the Albion.

"The club is duty bound to listen to any constructive offers of investment. Indeed, the Albion board have openly stated that they would be prepared to consider any applications from people wishing to invest. However, we believe that the timing of this bid, and the way it has been made public, do not demonstrate a supportive attitude to the issues currently facing the club and its fans. This is a time for partnership, not takeovers.

"Finally, the supporters' groups would urge Mr Purdew to consider alternative ways forward that will not compromise the existing shareholding structure.

"The resounding support that Dick Knight received at the meeting on Monday night reinforces our belief that this is the view of the vast majority of Albion fans. The agenda will now need to move forward to the referendum campaign for a YES, YES vote which will be launched by supporters' groups and the club at Hove Town Hall on the evening of April 12th."

Dick Knight has poured scorn on a renewed bid for the club by health farm tycoon Stephen Purdew.

Purdew has restated his offer to pump millions of pounds into the Seagulls after a "chance meeting" with Knight yesterday.

But Knight has laughed off Purdew's claim that they will be meeting again. Purdew said: "I had a chance meeting with Dick Knight yesterday. We only had a brief discussion and we are going to have a meeting again.

"I am still very interested and he knows I am. The club has not got very far in the last year. It has still got the same problems. I don't think he is getting anywhere. Under the circumstances he has done a good job, but he has got to put trust in other people.

"He has got Brighton at heart, I have never disputed that. Hopefully we will get more out of our next meeting than last time."

Knight said: "I was walking along Church Road in Hove yesterday afternoon when I was beset upon by someone shouting at me. He persisted in following me and introduced himself as Stephen Purdew.

"I'd met him once before, but I didn't recognise him as he has changed his hairstyle. He said we must have lunch some time. If that's a meeting let us treat it with the contempt it deserves. I can assure you there are no dates in my diary to have lunch with Mister Purdew. This is complete nonsense."

The Argus exclusively revealed a year ago that Sussex-born Purdew, owner of several health farms including Forest Mere in Hampshire, was willing to pump millions into Albion in return for a controlling stake.

Talks broke down when Knight rejected the offer and insisted no single person would be allowed control. Knight revealed earlier this month that Albion expect to lose £100,000 in their first season at Withdean.

Unfortunately, I disagree. The people that made up their own minds at previous elections will continue to do so whether they be left, right or floating. The people that voted because News Int put it on their front page will still need others to push them one way or another.

At least with the torygraph or the gruniad, both of which have a political stance, they don't tend to put on front page pre-election and say "this is how you must vote"

Well exactly, this is my point. If we are rid of the NI titles we are rid of the most obvious political brainwashers. Perhaps the Mirror and the Star would start shouting more loudly about what they want (I don't even know what, if any, political leaning the Star has) but they are unlikely to chop and change depending on one man's personal preference
