Job seekers allowance

Anyone know the ins and outs of jobseekers allowance.

here are the basics.

My wife has paid National Insurance for 23 years from 1985 to 2008, from 2008 to present she is paying voluntary contributions for the pension, this has recently risen to £12.50 per week ( £50 per month ) and is getting expensive,

In a recent pension prediction the voluntary contributions (12.50) will only make £13 per week...

So she called the job centre plus as we have been told that if she gets job seekers allowance the NI will be paid by the govt.

Now they have called asking for all MY NI details, my wages, My RAF pension, our mortgage etc...

I am not willing to discuss and reveal these things just to get job seekers allowance for her.

My main question is why are they interested in my circumstances? yes I work and i have an RAF pension but also have paid taxes every month since 1979..

I am getting increasingly pissed off, it seems that is we arrived under a lorry we would get what we ask for, but honest taxpayers get diddly squat..

I was even told yesterday by a mate because he earns over 40k his wife has her child benifit stopped.,...

This is normal. Job seekers allowance is based upon household income. When I went on jobseekers, I had to provide my Girlfriend's details, we aren't married, and had only lived together for a year at the time.

I was on jobseekers for 4 weeks and would never go back on unless I really needed it - basically they never informed HMRC that I stopped claiming, hence messing up my tax code for thge next year, costing me nearly £1000 in overpaid tax - something that I am still trying to resolve (although, fortunately the tax people at HMRC are very helpful, unlike my experiences of the job centre).

on a slightly more serious note my (limited) understanding is that if you have an income (or potential income) from all sources in excess of over £80/w you are on a hiding to nothing when it comes to getting benefits

Big society, we're all in this together

Cameron is still a wanker

I think they are bit more strict on this now. When I was made redunadant, I would not get any JA, as I had some redundancy money - so basically they would let me run down anything I had until I was almost on the streets before thinking about possibly helping. After all, I'd only been working for 28 years and never claimed a penny in benefits, why on earth would I think I was due anything al all.

Regarding your mate, without knowing the details, I wonder why he needs child benefit if he is earning almost twice the national average wage ?

As ya know im not that great at the moment and im going to lose 1 benefit 100% and if i go into volunteer work like i want to i will lose the other which is 424 a month so cant really afford to lose that at the moment, its like the government dont want to help people get back to work so frustrating

if you were to get divorced she would be eligible for housing benefit, council tax benefit and income support - the thick end of 1K/ month

and I think to myself, what a wonderful world

It's all because David Cameron is a wanker

or, is it because thousands of wankers defraud the system?

to the OP, shirley the household income (which it seems this would be) is for something other than job seekers? im pretty sure you get that regardless, but other benefits take into account other occupants in the household.

ah... though on second thoughts, does the job seekers rules change because you are married and the partner is expected to support you?

My girlfriend lost her job recently and the JC+ have been nothing but polite and helpful. She had to give all her details and mine - I had no problems with that - and she's now getting JSA. Straight forwards and very painless. We're not married and I earn quite a reasonable amount but it was still based on her circumstances not mine. I think they ask for your details as they also consider other benefits you could claim ( like Council Tax relief ) but these ARE based on the household income.

As an aside on this has anyone else seen the paperwork required for the minimum pension guarantee - it's terrifying and almost certainly designed to scare the elderly from claiming (this was Blair/Brown being a wanker not Cameron - although he is)

Bingo!

She should be entitled to claim JSA regardless of how much you earn however they always look at the other benefits you can claim at the same time which are based on joint household income, such as housing benefit and council tax benefit. If I were you I'd explain that you are ONLY interested in claiming JSA for your wife and are not looking at any other benefits so your own circumstances should not be called into question

He is a nurse and so is his wife both earning just over 20 k each, and they pay for child minding.....

I just dont know what my mortgage has to do with the Job centre.....

it seems work for 30 years and get bugger all...

arrive on a lorry or not bother to work at all and get everything u ask for,

I actually find it humiliating disclosing my financial details to a stranger....i have never missed a mortgage payment, never claimed a penny neither has the wife.

We have decided we will shoulder the cost ourselves and carry on moaning.... stuff the Govt and I was always tory.

Then you're a bit of a plonker - follow Colossal Squids suggestion and get the £67 your wife is entitled to. I'd always heard how difficult it is to get JSA and reams of forms to complete - it's complete and utter nonsense. The government have made it as easy as applying for a season ticket !

EDIT - OK having noted the time on your post you probably hadn't read CS's post so plonker is a bit strong. You would be daft not to take the money though.

They are actually trying to help you by getting all the info up front to see if you qualify for help in paying the mortgage ( 3 or 6 months down the line I think this kicks in, if you qualify )

I'd say so. Theres no shame in getting what you're entitled to, especially given your years of contributions to date. JSA is a right and your wife is entitled to claim it. Make sure you call up from a landline however as the jobcentre are very sneaky with their numbers and it'll cost you on a mobile, unless you can find a proper geographic number that works here: SAYNOTO0870.COM - Non-Geographical Alternative Telephone Numbers

Remember, don't be afraid or embarrassed to tell it like it is. Your wife wants to claim the JSA she is perfectly entitled to BUT you are not looking to sponge off the system for every benefit going so are not looking to disclose your own personal circumstances.

Best of luck with it

I earn a decent wage plus my pension, so other beneifits are not being asked for, only JSA so her pension NI payments will be made.

we have been told that because we were only paying personal contributions that does not entitle her to ANY benefits....
