So..Murray cost us £450,000 in the end!

I love the way that you are suggesting that Murray has cost us shed load in wages, yet you fail to take wages into account when arriving at your figure of £450,000.

As it turns out Murray signed for only a small increase in what you were offering (certainly less than £10k / week) and the signing on fee is nowhere near what the rumours are suggesting. I see that Paul D has beaten me to this.

In reality - your £450,000 figure should creep nearer the million mark when you factor in all his wages etc.

We got a good deal out of this (from an outsiders perspective) - will he live up to what we hope? Who knows. But one thing is for sure - the risk we are taking with Murray is no greater than the risk you are taking with Hoskins, yet Hoskins has cost you at least £500k - and the stinger may well be for you guys, that his wages aren't far off what Murray will be earning at Palace.

It sucks when someone good leaves. We are going to be gutted when Danns inevitably goes - but most of us Palace fans won't be suggesting that he wasn't worth the offer and 'we'll replace him with better' because the truth of it is we'll be hard pushed to get better without a large transfer fee.

Here's hoping that there are two epic encounters with you lot next season!

Yes, but the cash is going to him, not you, he will get extra wages in lieu of a cash payment to BHA. Win win for all of us, oh except BHA :D
Al, you seem to be labouring under a few mistruths here.

Firstly, it was all FRIGHTFULY funny for you Nigels in the first instance because you were poaching our star striker and initially we were all a bit annoyed by it - our immediate take on it was that we were not competing with relegation fodder like yourselves. We were all rather hoping to believe the noises coming out of our club that we could have paid his demands, but didn't consider him worth the money. And of course, a player settled in Brighton would obviously choose to stay at our superior club had we been willing to come close to matching your own offer to the player.

As it turns out, we CAN believe what is coming out of the club. We've just signed Hoskins for £500k, Buckley for £875k (a winger who can operate as a striker) and apparently we are looking at another £1m+ striker. And lets not forget we already had Ash Barnes who scored 20 goals last term and is only 22 or something.

I'm pleased you pissed yourselves laughing at how you'd trumped us in May by signing one of our better players. We'll save ourselves for later on in the season. I'm increasingly optimistic that we are going to absolutely THUMP you this season coming.

Well if you are going to suggest hypotheticals then let me put a fe of those back at you....

Reports are suggesting that we are soon going to add Jordan Rhodes to our strikeforce next season. Murray & Rhodes could be quite deadly. With the likes of Scannell and Zaha just chomping at the bit for a starting place as well as the evergreen Iversen. We still have Ambrose who is easily a minimum 10 goal-a-season midfileder. Added to that one of the best (if not the best) keeper outside the Prem and young Clyne - who is every bit the future England Right-back. Yet despite this nucleus of players I still would be satisifed with midtable next term because the Championship is a tough, tough league.

We are sure to get a few midfielders and defenders in before August, and then we can really compare squads.

Word to the wise Brighton - don't confuse a great League 1 season with being a good championship side. The two are very different. Hence why I am not getting to excited about Murray - and am happy about the transfer becuase the outlay is relatively minimal. I'd be far more concerned if he'd cost us several hundred thousand in transfer fees. Talk is cheap. Our chairmen could come out and say that 'we get what we want, and what we want is Premiership football within 2 years' but that doesn't mean a thing. I think you guys would be wise to wait and see how your team are doing towards christmas before deciding that you are too big or ambitious for the likes of Glenn Murray. You are still a team that has spent the vast majority of your lives in the lower leagues, and need to establish yourselves in this league before you start cliaming some sort of right to a Premiership charge.

The point is that your fans were chuckling away because you took Murray off our hands, incorrectly assuming we couldn't compete financially. It turns out we could, but chose not to. That's why we'll be the ones laughing LAST.

Nothing to do with us expecting a Premiership charge or whatever.

Very good post and really what needs to be said I remember when Peterborough went up a few seasons ago with players like Makail Smith, George Boyd and Aaron McLean, i thought they would breeze it and easily survive their first season in championship and they ended up relegated. I think the success of Norwich, Leeds and Millwall might have distorted how difficult the jump could be. Swansea should be our role model, 3 good consistent seasons where they have progressed every year.

Ok, so in summary.

Palace4eva says he won't be getting extra wages.

Little Al says he is getting massively extra wages because he didn't cost a fee.

Which one of them is wrong? Probably both of them in my opinion.

Something doesn't add up. It's either a tax fiddle ( remember Nicky Law's signing of Luke Beckett in 2001 and the brown envelope wage structure ) or someone at palace is talking bullshit.

The difference of what Murray is earning at Palace (I am led to believe by a very reliable poster on the BBS with inside connections) compared to what Brightons best offer was is £500 p/w. Yes five hundred pounds.

I just wanted to point this out as you guys are claiming that you didn't really want or need him - when Gus was offering to make him one of the (if not the) highest paid player at the club. He wanted out, and what you infer from that is that he wasn't worth the money and you are going to get better.

Anyway, that is academic. I think we have got a good deal for Murray, but at this stage have no idea how he will do in the champ. The same way that you have no idea how any of your players will fare in the championship.

The reason Palace fans are feeling more optimisitic this time around is we have seen in the second half of the season that our squad can hold its own in this league. Nothing spectacular, but solid enough. Added to that a few players who may just have a good campaign, and it is hard not to be optimisitic about next season.

I understand why you guys are buoyed - who wouldn't be after a title-winning season, but teams will get annoyed with your cockiness very quickly. Norwich, Millwall and Leeds have skewed the picture of what a first season in the next league up is usually like. A lot of teams underperformed last term.

For what it is worth - I hope you guys stay up because there is no other match in the Palace calender like the Brighton matches, and I enjoy us thumping you lot

As long as the season ends with us looking down on where you finish - I'll be a happy chappy! :D

Coul I just remind all Palace fans everywhere, that today we SMASHED our record transfer

hardly smacks of lack of ambition.

Murray will be fine for you. Providing you give him the service and allow him the luxury of spending half the match standing offisde

I never have questioned your lack of ambition...it is just that perhaps you lot think your ambition is going to be easily achieved that we take exception to.

Enjoy the money signings, it is exciting. But please don't in the next breath lambast Palace for daring to take a player on a free and offer a few extra hundred pound a week wages than you were offering as us 'living beyond our means'. One good set of season-ticket sales for your shiny stadium and one season of Championship funds doesn't mean that a lot of big signings is living within your means.

SJ ruined our club and not one true fan thought that his spend, spend, spend was the way to go. If your spending equates to success for you guys then fair play - but if it goes tits up and you go back down and your 'sugar daddy' pulls his funding, then don't give it the moral high ground over Palace when the taxman eventually comes knocking.

Well done for shifting a lot of season tickets for a brand new stadium after winning the leauge and getting into a proper division for the first time in years with no teams nearby to compete with for fans.....

Once the Chelsea, Utd, Arsenal and Spurs fans living in Brighton have had their fill of a crap season in the championship seeing a team comprised largely of unknown League 1 players, they'll not renew next term....

Let's see how many you take away with you shall we?
