Brighton born Russell Martin who now plays in the Premiership with Norwich has been handed his first international call-up to the Scotland squad.

I played with him at Sussex rep squad when we were younger so its great to see a player go so far in the game.

Very few don't make it at Brighton at end up playing in Premiership and becoming an International well done to him.

Ha Ha, a chap I work with is mates with Russell Martin and they used to play in the same team when they were younger. In the last year he's seen RM go from League One to Prem and now International call up. Typically the chap I work with is adamant RM is no better than himself

Ha ha. Who is your mate? To be honest he never stood out as being amazingly better than anyone else but he did have a great attitude and also done the basics very well glad to see him go so far. Don't get me wrong though hes a very good player he must be to have made it this far but like i say when we were younger he didn't stand out from the crowd.

Whilst he may not have been the most talented player when younger (i played with him at Lewes and cant recall him standing out) he made for up with pure hard work. Whilst others have had ther talent but spunked it getting caught up in the trappings of being a footballer ie the women, money, booze etc he concentrated on football.

A freind of mine was at dinner with him and thier girlfriends in the past week and Russell mentioned that he had never even been drunk before. The Norwich team knew this and got him hammered once promotion was secured.

Also signed a new contract with a fat payrise it seems so fair play to the lad.

To be fair, playing for Norwich is probably more impressive than playing for Scotland.
