Well Salmond has promised a referendum within the lifetime of this Parliament.

Is this the beginning of the end of the UK as we know it?

I hope not - and I guess so does the Labour Party - with all those Scottish Labour MPs at Westminster, their chances of ever winning an election in 'what's left' of the UK would be severley damaged.

Even though the SNP swept to power today, I really cant see the Scots going the whole hog.

Agreed. Will be interesting to see how Salmond plans to fund it too with the major oil companies showing no interest in registering as Scottish companies and the bottom falling out of Scotland's plans to go running to the EU, cap in hand and asking for the same treatment as Ireland.

What would we CALL what remains of the UK?

The monarchy would still be united - as it was from 1603 to 1707 - but I doubt if calling the nation the 'United Kingdom' would work any longer. And the Welsh and Ulstermen wouldn't tolerate the nation being called 'England'. 'Great Britain' is obviously ruled out as well since the island of GB includes Scotland.

Any ideas, anyone?

I dont mind the Welsh so much, they know which side their butter is on.

This. Let the Scots go if they want...within 20 years they'll be bankrupt and begging rejoin the union. Then the question would be whether or not we'd take then back...

Is Cannada part of the UK?
That's my point. Canada started as a colony, not part of the UK.

There never was a Canadian crown. There was a Scottish crown and an English crown and they became united when James VI became James I as well.

What would we call the rump nation of England, Wales and Northern Ireland? Mentioning the monarchy in the name of the nation would surely be inappropriate?

Surely we would simply have United Kingdom of England, Wales and NI. Then it would be up to the new Scots parliament to decide whether they intend to be a Republic or whether they intend to continue to have the Windsors as the constitutional monarchy of Scotland. If the latter, our monarchy would simply be the constitutional monarchs of two separate nations.
