Do Bilbao from Stanstead.
Wait till April and the weather is better and then have a long weekend there. Gugenheim is fabulous. Bus into town costs 5 euros or something. Stay at the Indauxtu (pronounced In-dow-choo) Hotel , book via the internet though about £75 per night for a double room if you look hard enough. It is a superb **** hotel. Tapas (or Pinxtos pronounced Pinchos) galore at every street and very very friendly people. Also get to the footy, superb stadium and noisy crowd. Fenrnando Llorente, like Torres only a better footballer all round.

One of the best cities in Europe IMHO and not expensive, like Rome or Paris.

If you want cheap, don't go to Rome or Paris, not cheap at all. If you want cheap, go outside of the euro zone

This. Paris is a nice place to visit but it wasn't cheap even before the pound dived compared to the Euro

Went to Venice weekend before last with myvacations Excellent price and changed flight from Easyjet to BA at no extra price and better times. Could also check in online, choose own seats and cases in hold at no cost. Great deal, although Venice beautiful but expensive.

Went to valencia last year for a weekend break.
Really nice city, split into two distinct centres. The old city centre, with lots of fantastic buildings, plus lots of bars and restaurants etc.
Then there is the port/beach area a couple of miles away. Some interesting modern museums and Americas Cup site.
Two City hop on and off bus tours cover the city. Plus good weather. A great weekend.

Eastern Europe might offer better value for money. Prague is great but Bratislava or Budapest intrigue me and Riga not sure about. Avoid Scandinavia as very expensive (but great). Croatia has some amazing city breaks too apparently and warmer. Will probably try one of these myself this year as money tight and promised the Mrs either Rome or Paris next year as they are where she mentioned too. Venice I liked but once off the tourist route was not incredible. I thought Amsterdam (canals etc.) or Germany too but got unexcited reaction.
