From memory, it was on the corner of Kingsley Road/Roberston Road.

The Greengrocers was either the old Abacus or the Pharmacy, I forget which.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.

Do you mean Tivoli Crescent?

I did mean Crescent yes. The disused shop is on the corner of Robertson /Hampstead Road. Kingsley stops just short. I believe Robertson, Tivoli and Kingsley are named after Boer War soldiers.

Early gigs at the newly opened Brighton Centre would sell out quickly, especially the standing tickets. However if you were unfortunate enough to only get a seat at the back, there was no problem.

For those with standing tickets, they never took them off you as you went in, so tickets in a fag packet lobbed up to mates in the seats and down they came. Some very hot and sweaty memories of the Who and the Jam

Anyone remember Alpine Sports along Western Rd, had a cracking skateboard dept in the basement that smelt of griptape. They used to sell Kryptonic 'seconds' the only ones I could afford. Think the guy who ran it now owns the Jog shop in Kemptown?
Also Wicks Models opposite the Level at the back of the Open Market, used to buy all my Scalextric from there.
I remember a tiny Virgin Records being opposite the club shop in Queens Rd.
Remarkably Swifts sports near the Steine, still going strong last time I was down that way! They used to sell imitation kits that were cheaper than the originals.
Oh and Nasty...a shop selling punk gear..my memory tells me it was in Air Street but I can't be sure, it may have been down near Sydney Street...I used to buy two different pairs of dayglo stripey socks and wear odd socks...there's nothing new kids of today!

I saw my first ever gig there, Gary Numan in 1980 still got the ticket it cost £4. The same price as a vinyl album or thereabouts...that's changed. Remember The Jams last gig? Had a seat upstairs but managed to rush the door with a load of mates to get standing. People were hang jumping the balcony and the bouncers were throwing them out. I had a brand new pair of black docs on and when I came out they were white with sweat....

By the seaside in West Somerset
The Kardomah Cafe in Church Road, Hove. Used to use it regularly in the late 60's - coffee in a glass cup. Must've long since disappeared.

Thank you for resurecting this thread, hadnt read it before, just read 27 pages of fantastic nostagia and memories.
A few of my own, mainly from 60's and 70's, i'll try not to go over earlier mentioned ones.

Jack Balls fishing tackle and bait shop in Edward St. We used to get the No2 bus from Woodingdean during the school hols, get the bait from Jack Balls, walk up to the pier and fish all day from the landing stages. Popping up to the ring donut kiosk by the amusements and buying a big bag of mis-shapes for 6d.

I lived directly in front of the Sunblest Bakery, mum used to work there Friday nights till 10-00, always came home with hot rolls and merangues.
As mentioned, the aroma of the bread was to die for, I was a Saturday boy on the wholesale lorries from 1968, till 1979, getting up at 3-30 in the morning and delivering the bread and cakes.

Uncle Sams in London Rd, we all used to play darts in the Downs Hotel but they wernt in the league so we all played for the Kensington in 1977/78. on the leagueby a mile and the landlord there, Jon i think used to be the sports photographer on the Argus early 70's

Friday nights, start in the Downs, the 45 bus down to The Steine, across to the Pickwick, up to the Sussex , across to the Queen Anne, anybody remember the old bird that used to play the acordian in the downstairs bar, the Bier Keller. Up the road to the Bosun, soggy carpet and the big table in the middle half way down, the guvenor on the front door, always scared the shit out of you. Up to the William Tell then down to Sherry's for a grope and a few more beers, lol.

Rottindean open air swimming pool, used to get the bus from Woodingdean and spend all day in the open air pool.

Was at Brighton Tech Coll when the marina was being built, remember our tutor taking us down there as Taylor Woodrow built it and watching the caisons being lowered into the sea by the huge crane to form the marina arm.

As said, Saturday morning pictures at the Astoria, also remember fondly the Duke of Yorks with their double seats, great for cuddling up to a date, The Gaiety,(later the Vogue).

Wrestling at the Sussex Sports Centre in Sussex Square by the taxi rank at the Clock Tower, all the top wrestlers appeared there in the early 70's. Seem to remember they used to have discos there as well.

What was the name of the bar in the arches on the beach I think opposite West Street about 1973, remember getting hammered in ther on my 18th, was okay until we left then the sea air hit me and wallop. Ended up being leant agaist O'Hagens window while someone got me a hotdog to soak up the booze.

Happy days

You don't know how lucky you were, growing up in Brighton in the 60s 70s and 80s

I grew up in Bognor Regis.

Butlins, a crappy pier that had blown down by the time I was 7 and that was about it.

I have some great personal memories, but the town itself was a bit shit.

Virgin Records in Queens road. Very small shop, where the club shop was before it moved over the road.

Boots, where Argos/Mcdonalds is now
Laskys, Western Road
Gee2 clothes shop western Road
WH Smith Record/cassette shop at the back of Chuhrchill Sq opposite the main WH Smith
Fortes restaurant where, Schu roughly is now

What was the name of the shop in the "old" Churchill Square, records downstairs and toys/models upstairs? Later became HMV before that in turn moved (twice!).
