keep hearing it's our best for eighty-something years. surely not long til it's the best ever, no? or did we go the first fifty games of the 167-166BC season conceding only one goal, drawing once, and got promoted mid-season to avoid the formality, or something.

seriously, football before the war (or maybe even 1960s) shouldn't be counted when it comes to historic stats - different game.

I think you should count everything, otherwise it's like these muppets who think football only started in 1992 with the Premiership.

Be good to know, though. And to think it could so easily have been a 12-point lead with Tranmere and the B'muff robbery. Incredible.

LDWDWDWWWWWWWWWL = 36 points on today's scale. We can get to 37 with wins over Exeter and Hartlepool.

Cliff Bastin was a left-winger, wouldn't really find himself against Thierry Henry.

There's no doubt that today's players are faster and fitter but that's not necessarily the same as saying they're better. If Bastin, or anyone else from that era were trained the same way, they'd probably be equally good players.

And you might as well say that you'd like to see Henry play in old-fashioned boots, with a leather football that resembled a cannon-ball, on pitches that were mudbaths and against defenders who kicked seven shades of shit out of forwards.

I agree with TG, wiping out the past is exactly the same as this nonsense that football didn't exist before the Premiership. The Albion started in 1901 not in some arbitrary year.

You are so, so right mate. Just on reading this I am reminded of playing at school in freezing midwinter on bone hard pitch with lace up ball, that when it struck your bare leg, was akin to a plastic bullett the friggin mark it left. As for heading it when wet, jeezzzzz

In this paragraph you have proven their point that football was a COMPLETELY different sport back then.

Modern footballers are also about 10 times more technically gifted and skilful.

That was still the case in the early-mid 1960's, I think it was the World Cup of 1966 which started to influence refereeing to protect attackers, and more importantly goalkeepers.

I saw a goal in 1967 where our centreforward called Tom White (brother of the late John of Spurs fame) BARGED the goalkeeper in the net as he gathered the ball on the line. And it stood....:ohmy:
