Turkish president urges Germany to help immigrants integrate | World news | The Guardian

Is it me or is this just a little worrying. When Germany unified there was an increase in right wing activity, especially in the Old East. Living in Poland then I was acutely aware of it as it coveerd both regions. In the late nineties it seemed to ahev dwindled but now its rearing its ugly head again but now from governement circles. East Germany never really faced its guilt over WWII like the West..... I fear that the revival of far-right politics in Germany is becoming a clear and present danger.

Or am I just showing how old I am... still living with the spectre of Nazism?

You're what? 40? And you reckon you're living with the spectre of Nazism?

Might as well be the threat of Turkish Nationalism on Armenians for all that it means to you.

Take a chill pill. Germany is an integral part of the EU with a fully mature democracy. Turks are safe there.

I think you're worrying too much.

The main far right party in Germany, the NPD, only gets about 1% of the vote nationally and is only present to a small degree in two of the regional parliaments.

Comments have been made by Merkel and other leaders from the CDU/CSU in the last few weeks about immigrants needing to do more to integrate e.g. learn the language.

IMO, not unreasonable.

If you were speaking about Austria, however, I wouldn't be so relaxed :(

You are probably right about Germany...we just havent heard this much in government since the demise of the neo fascist politico (forgot his name) in Saxony 15 years ago.

I agree with this. I go to Germany quite regularly and take a close interest in goings-on there and the extreme right wing is very small. There are some rather nasty skinhead gangs around - and I certainly wouldn't like to walk around of the more deprived areas of East Germany at night - but the chance of any significant nationalist movement is zero.

Totally agree about Austria though - I really wouldn't be so complacent about that country.

Didn't Merkel say this week that 'multiculturalism has failed'? I'd say that was quite a strong commment from the country's Premier. Imagine the shitstorm if Cameron said that here.

Thats exactly what I am referring to:

'....comes days after the chancellor, Angela Merkel, declared that multiculturalism in Germany had "utterly failed" and one of her closest political allies, Horst Seehofer, said immigration from "alien cultures" should end.'

My Turkish friends stated some time ago, that they are being manipulated for political gain from the US and Germany. They aren't too pleased with Israel lately, after that aid boat invasion that killed several Turkish - and Turkey has been supportive of Israel.

The Turkish workers have long been vilified in Germany, seen as racially inferior by many (rings a bell!). I remember it etching at them when I was there way back in 1978.

The Turkish people I have met, have been very reasonable people, pleasant and just wanting to get along - like everyone else.
As a nation though, they are key in some means that serve the West. And we know that The West don't always have everyone's best interests in mind - especially not in the Middle-East.

It's a gambit, and a weak one from Merkel to try and 'threaten' or manipulate.
I don't see how the Turkish government could be remotely swayed by Germany coming out with that, quite honestly. Does she think that so much income is generated for Turkey by migrant workers sending some Euros back to their families?

Merkel is correct though....multiculturalism doesn't work and has failed.

Whereas I am sure many of the idealistic lefties on here have pounced on this statement as extreme right...

What she is saying is that the immigrants do not "buy in" to the German culture, learn the language or want to share the values of the country.

Even many 2nd or 3rd generation offspring of immigrants do not integrate very well.

It's a fact, in fairness to Ange...

Too right. If a British Political leader (of any Party) had said that over here just imagine the fallout.

If/When Turkey joins the EU just how many Turks will want to make their way to Germany? 100s of thousands?

Actually not...... the number of NEW immigrants to Germany has dropped over the last few years...... and Turks have little chance of gettign rich... whereas Turkish entrpreneurs would love to get their teeth into Romania and Bulgaria on an even footing.

Yes I know these two countries are very weak but one thing Turks are are entrepreneurs and they know these two countries very well.

the recent debate doesnt mean a return to Nazism. the point about multicultralism failling means they are going drop the policy of pussy footing around with respecting cultural difference: if you stay in germany, assimilate, learn german and become german.

They thought it was fine with the Weimar republic in the twenties, that was a welfare state a bit like they have today. How wrong it went!
